I am writing, as a resident of the Westfield South subdivision in south Bozeman, to express my support for
the Blackwood Groves development near my home. I am a supporter of high-density, mixed use
developments for their efficiency and their relatively low environmental impact. This development makes
sense in light of the rapid growth of southwest Bozeman. It is entirely appropriate to pack new
development tightly into the city, and areas immediately adjacent to the city, as is the case with this
project. Of course, improvements to traffic engineering and other infrastructure will need to be made in
order to accommodate the higher population density and traffic to, from and within the development.
Vehicular traffic should be directed onto the main thoroughfares, and away from the quieter residential
streets. I would also encourage the expansion of Streamline bus routes to the south end of Bozeman, an
area which is currently underserved by mass transit.
I am especially attracted to the prospect of a neighborhood commercial district this far south. We in this
part of town have to travel significant distances, by automobile, to obtain essential goods and services from
such businesses as supermarkets, drug stores and general retail. This is an inefficient use of our time,
undermines our personal health, as we are unable to walk to and from routine shopping trips, and degrades
the air quality in Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley. I am also a big fan of the few neighborhood restaurants,
and even bars, which already exist in Bozeman, such as those near the Third and Kagy intersection, and
those in the Cannery District. They represent an eclectic and welcome alternative to the (typically tourist-
oriented) downtown entertainment and nightlife scene. I would hope that the Blackwood Groves
development will provide other such low-key, high-quality opportunities to shop, eat, relax and enjoy life in
our community, close to me.
Please approve this project, subject to City guidance as to the worthy objectives outlined above.
Sincerely.
Gregory O. Smith
