First Name DoriRose Last Name Dusl Email Address dorirose.d@gmail.com Phone Number 4062241956 Comments My name is DoriRose Dusl and I’m a citizen of Bozeman. For the fiscal year of 2020 in Bozeman, police/police pensions took up over 30% of expenditures. This is problematic. Across the nation, we can see that the legacy of the racially targeted war on drugs has scarred communities with mass incarceration and torn families apart. Furthermore, the system is set up so that police are in a chain of obedience and aren’t held morally responsible for their actions as individuals. As a student at BHS, the presence of police in my school creates a hostile environment wherein myself and other students feel unsafe. This is especially true for black and indigenous students. Bozeman is extremely lacking in diversity, this is very apparent in our schools. So to have police in and around our buildings only increases the feelings of anxiety and isolation people of color experience in our predominantly white community. I demand that the local government (mayor Chris Mehl, city council, city commissioners, and city manager Jeff Mihelich) defund the Bozeman police and allocate those funds to community building resources such as education, the library, and parks and recreation. Additionally, I demand that they remove the police from Bozeman high school. Thank you. Respectfully, DoriRose Dusl.
