HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC-JM Urban Ag Planning Board June 9 memoMEMO TO: Bozeman Planning Board FROM: Cathy Costakis & Jen Madgic RE: Growth Policy Amendments, Urban Agriculture DATE: June 8, 2020 Please consider the following text amendments to the Growth Policy: Theme 1 A City of Neighborhoods The idea is to promote walking or short commutes to things in life we value and depend on including jobs, schools, places of worship, friends, goods and services, open spaces, trails, appropriately scaled urban agriculture such as community gardens, and more. Consider adding an objective under Goal N-2: N-2.5 Ensure that new development includes opportunities for urban agriculture, including rooftop and home gardens, community gardens, and urban farms, where appropriate. Theme 2 A City Bolstered by Downtown and Complementary Districts Innovative design and planning include ideas like pocket neighborhoods, smaller housing, green alleys, community gardens urban agricultural, and creativity in our public spaces. DCD-2.10 Collaborate with Montana State University School of Architecture and the Sustainable Foods and Bioenergy Systems department to develop educational materials and opportunities for local architects, community planners and citizens on how to do quality urban design for infill and greenfield sites. Theme 3 Consider adding “urban farms” to EPO-1.3: EPO-1.3 Inclusion of community gardens and urban farms as part of open spaces outside of watercourses and wetlands in subdivisions is encouraged. where there are good soils. Theme 5 EE-2.3 Adopt zoning regulations that establish and define the range of urban agricultural practices, including vertical farms and other forms of urban farming, as a permitted or conditional use in appropriate locations. Urban agriculture can be compatible with a variety of land use designations shown on the Future Land Use Map. Definitions Urban Agriculture- The practice of cultivating, processing and distributing food in or around urban areas. Urban agriculture can also involve animal husbandry, aquaculture, agroforestry, urban beekeeping and horticulture.
