Dear City Commissioner,
I am opposed to the redesignation of the current R1 zoning to REMU zoning that would enable the proposedBlackwood Groves Subdivision. A modest change of one acre or less for a convenience store makes sense, but I feelthe rest of the area should remain R1. When broad changes are made like the current proposal, developers seekevery way possible to exploit the zoning to maximize their profits. May I remind the Commission of the high riseexpensive condos being built on Babcock and S. Seventh. The developers found a zoning loophole and exploited it.The High rise building looms high above modest homes and has destroyed the residential character of thatneighborhood. Much can be said for the high rise condo buildings at E. Olive and Black and at the end of E.Babcock.
I have lived in Bozman for almost 50 years and am appalled at what is happening to my community. The CityCommission approved destruction of at least four mobile home areas (N. Willson, Tamarack and N. 5th, forexample) in recent years so that they could be replaced by very expensive commercial and residential developmentor in one case a park, with no attending provisions to help find affordable housing for the displaced mobile homeresidents. The Commission set up an “opportunity zone” near Rosaurers (one of the more expensive grocers in thearea) that not only enabled more foo/foo commercial development but was in part paid for with public taxpayersubsidies. The whole purpose of “opportunity zones” was to give access to fresh food to the least wealthy amongus. Again the developers exploited this loophole to continue with their high end obscenities. Why does the CityCommission continue to enable developers this kind of rape of our community? If this continues, where are ourpolice, fire fighters and teachers suppose to live? Are we to turn into another Jackson or Aspen? Every year I givegenerously to HRDC to support the homeless and the poor of our town. Do your part and put proper restrains on thedeveloper. Do more than pontificate about affordable housing. Put real affordable housing programs in place andmake the developers pay their fair share.
Thanks for listening.---------------------------Jerome Coffey133 Nostalgia LaneBozeman, MT 59715Home: 406-587-8872Cell: 801-829-8838coffey@montana,edu
