As part of a stormwater project at the corner of Kurk Ave and S. 30th Avenue in Meadowcreek Subdivision, mature, twenty foot high, healthy, cottonwood trees are being ordered to be removed. The tree crew is out there right now cutting down trees. I request that the City immediately contact the contractor doing the tree removal and halt the removal of any mature tree over 10 feet tall. This is occurring without any notice to the Meadowcreek HOA members, as the recent HOA meeting disclosed only that the ponds would be dredged and cleared out of brush. The HOA meeting did not disclose to the homeowners that any large mature, healthy trees would be removed. I have reviewed the City of Bozeman “Stormwater Basin Maintenance Guide” for “maintai[ing] my HOA pond” that is provided on the City's website. Nowhere in the maintenance guide is there any mention of cutting down large mature trees as a stormwater maintenance need, in fact, several of the photos of projects posted of various stormwater projects on the City’s website show trees in them. I would also note that this subdivision was built in 2006, and the trees in question are, many of them, twenty feet tall or taller and were probably in existence before the drainage pond was dug. In any event they are not in the pond but are growing next to and at the same height of the rest of the park, not in the pond or on the sloping banks. If there is a legitimate purpose for removal of these trees, I would request that there should be adequate notice and opportunity for public comment by Meadowcreek homeowners about the necessity of removing mature trees, which provide bird habitat, wind break, and beauty to the neighborhood. For your reference I a sending you photographs of the area as well. I will send them in a separate email to make sure there is no problem with this email being delivered. Thank you in advance for any assistance with this important issue. We appreciate your concern. Laura and Barry Miles, 3359 S. 26th Avenue, Bozeman, MT 59718
