To Whom It May Concern,
In the wake of the senseless murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd at the hands of the police, I am
writing to ask that the city of Bozeman takes a public stand to condemn racism and police brutality in our
community.
I know that the Bozeman Police Department has in the past considered the use of body cameras on
officers. I urge you the Bozeman City Government and Police Department to require the use of these
cameras, and to require that cameras are turned on when officers respond to police calls.
Second, I ask that the City of Bozeman implements evidence-based de-escalation trainings for police
officers if these are not already in use.
Yes, Bozeman is not Minneapolis, yet body cameras and de-escalation trainings remain essential to the
safety and well-being of people of color in our community. The gruesome deaths of black people that
continue to haunt the news cycle are an awful reminder that racism is alive and well in our country, and all
of us Montanans have the responsibility to stand up against racism. I hope that you are doing the same.
