Hello ! I am seeing masks with exhale valves around town, plus many ads for these popping up on-line. Can we dosomething to raise awareness that these masks DO NOT protect anyone around you ? They filter only the incomingair, thus protecting only the wearer. It would in fact be ideal if our county could ban their use, as they have been inthe Bay Area.
Per an ABC news article: "Some states have drawn a hard line against their use. California's Bay Area countiesbanned their use as part of their universal mask order that went into effect April 17. Violation of the order ispunishable as a misdemeanor under the California Health and Safety Code, and can result in a fine up to $1,000,imprisonment up to 90 days or both."https://abcnews.go.com/Health/ditch-valve-face-mask-pros-cons/story?id=70511555
And from the same piece, quoting William Schaffner, MD, professor of preventive medicine and infectious disease
at Vanderbilt University Medical Center:"We want to protect you from me. And so, this valved N95 [mask] really doesn't function appropriately in thisCOVID environment-- either in the health care setting, or in the community."
Best wishes, Clara Pincus
