1. Temporarily (summer) shut off motorized travel from Main Street from Wilson to Rouse (which would alsonecessitate shutting side streets from Mendenhall and Babcock), much like is done for Music on Main, in order tocreate a pedestrian mall, much like Pearl Street in Bozeman.
2. Close streets and put out tables under tents on the streets under and around tents for 2 and 4 people, spacedappropriately for a COVID world. Require pedestrian traffic to be one way on each side of the median strip in thesame manner that is done for autos. Create “no walk zones” around tables to keep safe distancing between tables andpedestrians. Create an app portal for restaurants to use to link customers to their menus so that they can place ordersand make payments by credit card.
3. Allow one or two food trucks to park on each side street to increase the number of dining options and to providelower cost alternatives for citizens who may not be able or willing to pay the prices commanded by brick and mortarrestaurants.
4. So that there is no waitperson/customer interaction, place tables with numbers along the sidewalks where waitstaff places food for pick up after they text the diner ether numbered location of their meal. Require that all meals beserved with disposable/recyclable plates and utensils. Allow for alcohol consumption in disposable/recyclablecontainers.
5. Install outdoor speakers and soundstage to allow for live and recorded music to be played during dining hours.
Such an investment in downtown could keep it alive during this time and it would also serve as a test for whether ornot Bozeman should consider making this section of Main Street a pedestrian mall during warm months in future,non-COVID years. Given our long winters, I can’t imagine making Main Street a permanent pedestrian mall likeBoulder has done with Pearl Street.
