HomeMy WebLinkAbout15 - Design Report - MDT Bozeman Shop Facility - Sewer DESIGN REPORT SANITARY SEWER Montana Department of Transportation Bozeman Shop Facility Prepared for: Faure Halvorsen Architects 1425 West Main St. #A, Bozeman, MT 59715 Prepared by: C&H Engineering and Surveying, Inc. 1091 Stoneridge Drive, Bozeman, MT 59718 (406) 587-1115 v' P Q 7 Project Number: 14223 January 2015 INTRODUCTION The proposed Montana Department of Transportation(MDT)shop facility is located on a 12.0019- acre parcel legally described as Tract MDT of Certificate of Survey No. 473F located in the Northwest Quarter of Section 26, Township 1 South, Range 5 East of P.M.M., City of Bozeman, Gallatin County, Montana. It is bordered by the 1-90 Frontage Road to the south, Nelson Road to the west, and City of Bozeman land to the north and east. The development will connect to existing City of Bozeman water and sewer systems. The proposed development includes a new administration/shop building(11,544 ft2),an equipment storage building (9,301 ft2), and a hot/cold storage building (3,200 ft2). Future development may include a 6,000-ft2 office building and a 7,200-ft2 storage shed. SANITARY SEWER SYSTEM There are no existing sewer main lines in the direct vicinity of the proposed facility and the elevation of the site is lower than the existing sewer line discharging to the Bozeman Wastewater Reclamation Facility (WRF). A grinder pump station is proposed to convey wastewater from the MDT facility and discharge to the existing manhole at the intersection of Springhill Road and the 1-90 Frontage Road. The pump station will only service the MDT facility as future development in this area is not anticipated in the foreseeable future. No emergency power will be provided as this is a single service pump station. The City of Bozeman will maintain the pump station in perpetuity. The City has portable power generation to provide emergency services to the pump station. Wastewater from the proposed buildings will gravity flow to a proposed 8-inch PVC main located on site. The 8-inch main will discharge to the on-site pump station. Pump Station Design Load The flow rates used herein are according to the COB DSSP and Circulars DEQ 2 and DEQ 4. The peaking factor for the office wastewater is determined by calculating the equivalent population and inserting the population into the Harmon Formula(Circular DEQ 2). Source Flow Unit Reference Office Employees 70 FTE MDT Wastewater Flow per Office Worker(average) 13 gpd/FTE Circular DEQ 4 Average Daily Flow 910 gpd Peaking Factor 4.3 Circular DEQ 2 Peak Office Flow 3897 gpd Peak Office Flow 2.71 gpm Truck Washing 8.00 gpm Truck Washing Time(120 min/day) 960 gpd MDT Total Average Flow 1870 gpd 1.30 gpm Total Peak Flow(peak office flow+truck washing) 10.71 gpm Force Main and Pump Design The grinder pump station is designed in accordance with Chapter 40 of Circular DEQ 2. The pump station is a concrete wetwell basin with two submersible grinder pumps for redundancy. The length of the force main is 4,880 ft with an elevation head of 41.9 ft. The proposed 1.5-inch PVC force main is sized to maintain a minimum scour velocity of 2 ft/sec at the maximum Hazen-Williams friction coefficient (C) of 120 (DEQ standard). Typical C values for new and degraded PVC pipe range between 140-160. The proposed pump is capable of handling the head conditions for the anticipated conditions (C between 140-160) and the DEQ maximum (C of 120). The system operating curve and supporting data and calculations are provided in Appendix B. The effective volume of the wetwell, 39 gallons, is designed to maintain filling times of 30 minutes or less for the design flow. Pump on and off switches will be located 0.4 ft apart in the 48-inch diameter basin to achieve the desired fill times. The pump will run for 2.74 minutes resulting in a cycle time of 32.74 minutes (1.83 cycles/hour). Pressurized cleanouts will be installed at all bends and at 1,000-ft spacing for straight runs. Pump station buoyancy calculations are included in Appendix B. The forcemain will discharge into the existing manhole at the intersection of Springhill Road and the 1-90 Frontage Road. The invert discharge point will be 6 inches above the crown of the existing 30-inch gravity sewer main running into the manhole. Flow direction of the discharged wastewater will match the existing flow direction in the manhole. The capacity of the existing 30-inch concrete main running out of the manhole is checked using Manning's Equation: Q = (1.486/n)AR"3S'i2 Manning's n = 0.013 for Concrete Minimum Slope = 0.004 ft/ft A=area= (3.14/4)d 2=4.9087 ft2 P =perimeter=2(3.14)r= 7.8540 ft R=hydraulic radius=A/P = 0.625 ft Qfull = 25.9415 cfs The existing main has adequate capacity to handle the additional discharge from the forcemain (0.0245 cfs). According to the 2007 Bozeman Wastewater Facilities Plan, the existing mains from this connection point to the WRF are flowing at less than 50% capacity for the peak day model. The capacity of the proposed on site 8-inch main is check using Manning's Equation: Q = (1.486/n)ARZi3Sii2 Manning's n = 0.013 for Concrete Minimum Slope = 0.004 ft/ft A= area= (3.14/4)d 2= 0.34907 ft2 P =perimeter= 2(3.14)r=2.0944 ft R=hydraulic radius =A/P =0.16667 ft Qf«u = 0.7592 cfs The proposed main has adequate capacity to handle the peak discharges from the on-site facilities (0.0075 cfs). Use ohmmeter to test and read output directly in ohms. 2 TROUBLESHOOTING CONDITION PROBABLE CAUSE Pump runs but does not pump liquid from basin. Pump impeller may be air locked;this occasionally occurs in a new installation.Start and stop pump several times to purge air. Run additional water into basin so that the pump will be submerged deeper to clear air. If air does not clear, it may be necessary to lift pump out of sealing elbow and start motor to allow pump to pump for a few seconds. If discharge is piped in with union, slightly break union and start pump to clear air. If pump has been installed for some time and does not pump, it may be clogged at grinder inlet. Discharge gate valve may be closed. Discharge check valve may be clogged or have a broken clapper. Discharge head may be too high.Check elevation. Red light comes on at control box. This indicates some water has leaked past the lower seal and has entered the seal chamber and made contact with the electrode probe. Pump must be removed from basin immediately for replacement of lower seal. Overload trips and high water level alarms. Push in red reset button to reset overload. If overload trips again after short run, remove pump and check for damage. Check grinder for clogged material as this can cause an overload condition on the motor A faulty component in the control box could exist. Yellow run light stays on continuously. Indicates H-O-A switch may be in the Hand position. Level control switch may have failed causing pump to continue to operate when water is below lower float. Grinder assembly may be partially clogged causing pump to operate at very reduced capacity. Check valve may be clogged causing low pump flow.Gate valve may be in Off position. Pump may be air locked. Circuit breaker trips. Reset breaker by pushing clear down on the handle, then put back to the On position. If breaker trips again in a few seconds, that indicates excessive load probably caused by a short in the motor or control box. If condition happens after an electrical storm, motor or control box may be damaged by lightning. A resistance reading of the motor with the lead wires disconnected from the control box can determine if the trouble is in the motor or control box. Pump is noisy and pump rate is low. Grinder assembly may be partially clogged with foreign objects causing overload on the motor. Grinder impeller may be rubbing due to bent shaft or misalignment. Grease and solids have accumulated around pump Pump On switch may be set too high. and will not pump out of the basin Run pump on Hand operation for several minutes with small amount of water running into basin to clean out solids and grease. This allows pump to break suction and break up the solids. Trash may have accumulated around lower weight causing pump to turn off too soon. Clean the trash from the weight and suspension cable. 3 COMMON PARTS LIST Item Engineering No Description 1 28139B000 V21-120-21 Motor Assembly 1 28139B001 V21-120-03 Motor Assembly 1 2813913002 V21-120-23 Motor Assembly 1 28139B002 V21-120-43 Motor Assembly 1 4 28139B000 V2S20-21 Motor Assembly 1 28139B00l V2S20-03 Motor Assembly 1 3 28139B002 V2S20-23 Motor Assembly 1 9 28139B002 V2S20-43 Motor Assembly 1 19 18 2 28134B000 Impeller,V2H,6.25"O.D. 1 28134B00l Impeller,US,5.25"O.D. 1 3 144245005 Cord Cap,Standard,12-5 1 28159B020 Cord Cap,0/D(Optional) 4 28171 B020 Power Cord,O/D,12-5(Optional) 1 - 5 28145B000 Rotating Cutter 1 1 6 28146B000 Stationary Cutter,V21-1 1 28146B00l Stationary Cutter,V2S 1 7 21576A010 Seal,7/8"Shaft,Upper 1 8 21576A010 Seal,7/8"Shaft,Lower r 9 28132B000 Motor Dome 1 24Nk 10 28135D000 Seal/Bearing Housing 1 -'j 22 11 28136D000 Lower Seal Plate 12 28154B000 Bearing Cap 28 ' 7 13 28133D000 Volute 1 13 23 ; \ , 14 12558A006 Ring,Retaining 1 17 15 001500131 0-ring,1/8"X 4.12 I.D. 1 20 ® 21 16 05876A120 0-ring,1/8"X 6.25 I.D. 1 17 001500321 0-ring,1/8"X 5.8591.D. 1 10 18 008340151 0-ring,3/32"X 1.737 I.D. 1 p 14 19 05022A088 Plug,1/4"Pipe 2 20 001780081 Screw,Socket Head,5/16"X.875" 10 21 001780051 Screw,Socket Head,5/16"X 1.25" 4 16 B 22 048200061 Screw,Socket Head,10-24 X.625" 7 23 109010001 Probe,Seal Fail 1 15 20 24 22578A102 Electrode Assembly 1 11 25 006280571 Shim,1.00 O.D.X.625 I.D.X.002 1 6 006280581 Shim,1.00 O.D.X.625 I.D.X.005 2 5 25 2 26 011300021 Screw,Flat Head,114"X.75" 1 26 22 27 21583A000 Washer,Retaining 1 27 28 000870081 Plug,1/8"Pie 1 4 MOTOR WIRING DIAGRAM Lo N Lo - N WHITE BLACK RED WH TE BLACK RED ORANG GREEN ORANGE GREEN RED T1-T7 WHITE T2-T8 T3-T9 BLACK rr i YELLOW YELLOW T6-T5-T4 SEAL SEAL LEAK DETECTOR LEAK DETECTOR 2HP,230V 1PH 2HP,230V 3PH WITH WITH SEAL LEAK DECTECTOR WITH SEAL LEAK DETECTOR &1215 COND.CORD &12/5 COND.CORD Lo N IN N WHTE WH TE BLACK RED BLACK RED ORANG GREEN ORANG GREEN •------T3 T1 T2 T3 T2 T6-T9 T1 T5-T8 T4-T7 YELLOW` YELLOW SEAL SEAL LEAK DETECTOR LEAK DETECTOR 2HP,200V 3PH 2HP,460V 3PH WITH WITH SEAL LEAK DECTECTOR WTH SEAL LEAK DETECTOR &12/5 COND.CORD &12/5 COND.CORD 5 THIS PAGE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK THIS PAGE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK STANDARD LIMITED WARRANTY Pentair Myers°warrants its products against defects in material and workmanship for a period of 12 months from the date of shipment from Pentair Myers or 18 months from the manufacturing date, whichever occurs first - provided that such products are used in compliance with the requirements of the Pentair Myers catalog and technical manuals for use in pumping raw sewage, municipal wastewater or similar, abrasive-free, noncorrosive liquids.
