WATER MAIN EXTENSION
DESIGN REPORT
A. General
This design report will give an overview of the proposed water main extension for the proposed
Resurrection Parish Catholic Church Expansion project on Lot 11A of the Tai Lane Addition, in
Bozeman, MT. The report includes a description of the proposed water main extension and
design parameters. The proposed improvements are anticipated to be constructed during the
spring of 2012. Once the water main is constructed and approved, the main will become a part
of the City of Bozeman system.

B. Existing Water Supply
The proposed water main extension will be served from the existing City of Bozeman water
distribution system in Kagy Blvd. The following information regarding pressures of the existing
system obtained from the City of Bozeman:

C. Proposed Water System
The proposed water main extension will consist of approximately 215 if of 8" Class 51 Ductile
Iron Pipe, wrapped in poly wrap and connect to an existing 8-inch stub. The proposed main will
terminate at a fire hydrant. Included in the appendix of this report is a plan and profile of the
proposed water main. The layout of the proposed water main meets the City of Bozeman design
criteria and will be located within a 30-foot wide water main easement. An existing public
sanitary sewer main is located approximately 30-feet west of the proposed water main alignment.
A fire hydrant will be installed at the end of main extension, fulfilling the distance requirement
for fire hydrant spacing, as well as assisting in flushing of the main. A gate valve will be
installed at the connection point to the existing 8-inch stub on Kagy Blvd.
The water service line has been sized based on fixture units by the Mechanical Engineer and will
be 1'/Z-inch copper service. A 4-inch fire suppression main is proposed to serve the Church.
D. Capacity Analysis
A capacity analysis was performed on the proposed water main extension. The water main
extension has been designed to meet the maximum demand plus fire flow during the peak hour.
The main extension will only serve the Church.
A Hazen-Williams "C" Factor of 130 was used in the pipe evaluation. The working residual
water pressure shall not be less than 20 psi at any point in the water distribution system under
maximum day plus fire flow and the velocity shall not exceed 15 feet per second through the
main.
The existing Church is not currently served by domestic water and is not metered so no historic
data is available. Based on information provided by the Mechanical Engineer, there will be
111.5 fixture units, equating to a maximum peak demand of 45 gpm.
In addition to the peak hour demand, the water main must also be sized to provide for fire flow
demand. Based on Appendix B of the 2009 International Fire Code, the minimum required fire
flow and duration for a 17,600 sf Type V-B structure is 1,500 gpm for two hours.
Based on a fire flow demand of 1,500 gpm the following Maximum Day and Peak Hour flows
are shown in Table 1.
TABLE 1
ANTICIPATED FLOWS
Flow Designation Flow m Fire Flow m Flow m
Maximum Day 15 1,500 1,515
Maximum Hour 45 1,500 1,545
Based on a fire flow demand and a maximum hour demand a maximum hour flow of 1545 gpm
is required. Flow analysis of an 8-inch D.I. pipe with a C value of 130 can provide the required
1,545 gpm with a pressure drop of approximately 1.2 psi, from 75 psi to 73.8 psi, well above the

minimum of 20 psi. The pipe velocity at 1,545 gpm is 9.9 Vs. Capacity analysis calculations
outlining the capacity of the proposed 8-inch pipe are included in the appendix of this report.
E. Conclusion
Based on this analysis, the proposed 8-inch water main extensions for the Resurrection Parish
Expansion project provides adequate service to meet the, peak hour demand and fire flows for the
development.
This project will require the approval of the City Engineer and MDEQ.
