The structure is a 1.5-story wood-framed house, built in a minimal traditional style with some craftsman elements on the side dormers. It has a rectangular plan with a concrete foundation, and a partial front gable roof with cross gable on the north end of the west side, and a shed roof dormer in the middle of the east side. The roof is covered in asphalt shingles, and the exterior walls are clad in horizontal vinyl siding. Three outdoor lamps are in the eave of the gable on the south elevation, and above those is an arched wood vent for the attic. The primary façade faces north, onto W Mendenhall St. The primary entrance is enclosed by a fence, and not easily accessible. The south elevation has a French door entry on the west end, as well as a second single door entry on the east end. Most of the original windows have been replaced, but most of the openings are intact while a few have been altered. Over the windows on the south, east, and west elevations are striped fabric awnings. Windows include a picture window west of the primary entrance, as well as fixed and single hung windows throughout. The site is vacant and has not been maintained. Vegetation around the property is overgrown, but includes a combination of coniferous and deciduous bushes, and a mature deciduous tree to the north of the primary façade and one in the southwest corner of the property near the south elevation. A concrete patio extends out from the south elevation, and concrete steps lead down to a concrete parking lot shared with surrounding businesses. The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, it was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Extensive alterations have been made to the property, and the site no longer retains integrity sufficient to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 622 W MENDENHALL ST Site Number: 113 HISTORY OF PROPERTY Prior to construction of this building, William H. Tracy purchased this property from the United States on June 15, 1872. He platted the land as Tracy’s 1st Addition in 1872. This residence was built between 1904 and 1912, according to the Sanborn maps (Sanborn Map Company Jan 1904, Sep 1912). Charlie C. Hardenbrook purchased the property on December 19, 1904. Charles Clyde Hardenbrook was born on September 11, 1873 in Taylor County, Iowa to Richard and Cornelia (Wilbur) Hardenbrook. He grew up in Bedford, Iowa and attended college in Monmouth, Illinois. After receiving a degree in business, he was hired by the Wiley Transportation Company in Yellowstone National Park. His job was to transport tourists through the Park. On December 30, 1908 he married Willie Crawford in Bozeman, MT. Charlie died a short time after his marriage at the young age of 36 years old on April 26, 1909. His remains were transported back to Iowa and he is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Bedford, Taylor County, Iowa (Findagrave.com 2004). After the death of Charles Hardenbrook, his estate was divided with ½ interest to his wife, Willie F. Hardenbrook, and ¼ interest to each of his parents, R. L. Hardenbrook and Cornelia Hardenbrook (Probate Case Files, District Court, Gallatin County). Willie Hardenbrook remarried on March 7, 1910 to William Bonner (Ancestry.com 2017). The property was sold in 1910. Addie M. Harper purchased the property in May 23, 1910. Addie May (Jenkins) Harper was born on August 27, 1869 in Spirit Lake Township in Dickinson County, Iowa to John B. and Matilda (Graham) Jenkins. Addie married Samuel Harper on December 29, 1886 in Gallatin County (Ancestry.com 2017). Samuel Harper was born in West Bedford, Ohio on December 30, 1847. During the Civil War, Harper enlisted in the army, Company D of the 122nd Ohio Infantry and fought in the battle at Gettysburg. He was wounded and discharged in 1865 (The Montana Standard 19 February 1929). In January of 1867 he enlisted in the United States Army in Company I, 13th infantry and served at Fort Shaw for three years. After he was discharged, he settled in Bozeman (The Billings Gazette 19 February 1929). During their time in Bozeman, Addie was a dressmaker and Samuel was a bailiff at the Court House. Samuel died on February 15, 1929 and is buried in Reese Creek Cemetery in Gallatin County, MT. Addie Harper died on September 14, 1962 in Bozeman, MT. Addie is buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. (Findagrave.com 2004). Addie Harper sold this property in 1945 to Jacob and Effie Terpstra. Jacob and Effie Terpstra purchased the property on October 31, 1945. Jacob was born in October 5, 1887 in Hitzum, Franekeradell Municipality, Friesland, Netherlands to Ynte Terpstra and Pietje Nijdam. Jacob traveled to America, arriving in New York, NY on the SS Potsdam on March 31, 1909. His parents and siblings followed him a year later, arriving in New York on March 22, 1910. Affien “Effie” Ungersma was born on January 17, 1895 in the small Dutch community of Chico Springs, Colfax County, New Mexico. In 1890, Effie’s family, along with another Dutch family the Oldenbugers, moved to Gallatin County, Montana and settled near Holland (later called Amsterdam), Montana. On November 21, 1917 Effie married Jacob Terpstra in Manhattan, MT. Between 1920 and 1923, Jacob, Effie, and their family moved to a Dutch settlement near Sioux City, Iowa. By 1930, they had moved back to Holland (no w Amsterdam), MT. (Findagrave.com 2004). Jacob and Effie moved to Bozeman in 1945 and purchased this property after retiring from farming. On April 29, 1965, Jacob and Effie Terpstra sold 410 sq. ft. of Lot 29, which is along North Seventh Avenue, to the State Highway Commission of Montana (D: 148/135). The Terpstra family lived in this house until Effie died on July 11, 1972. Jacob died just three years later on July 14, 1975. They are buried together in Churchill Cemetery in Churchill, MT. (Findagrave.com 2004). After the death of Effie and Jacob, their son Ernest Terpstra sold the property to Russell W. and Linda E. Sime on June 14, 1976. The current owner of the property, as of January 2020, is Bozeman Exchange Associates LLC. Table 1. McDonald Architects. At that time, it was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Extensive alterations have been made to the property, and the site no longer retains integrity sufficient to convey historic character. The site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria. It is found to lack individual significance for association with events that have made a contribution to the broad patterns of our history under Criterion A. The site lacks direct association with persons of historical significance under Criterion B. Under Criterion C, the site has lost integrity sufficient to convey historic character in reference to potential associations with a type, period, or method of construction. Furthermore, the site is unlikely to yield information that would contribute significantly to our understanding of the past under Criterion D. Metcalf recommends this site not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP on the basis of lost integrity. If sites in the vicinity constitute a potential historic district, this site should be considered non- contributing. The application of modern siding, installation of new windows and modifications to original openings, and overgrown surrounding vegetation has affected integrity of materials, design, workmanship, and feeling. In addition, surrounding lots that once contained other residential structures have since been razed and the paved, vacant lots to the south and east have affected integrity of setting.
