The house is small, with a long, narrow, roughly rectangular plan shape and a concrete foundation. The roof is gable-front and clad in asphalt shingles. Rafter tails are exposed along the east and west gable sides. A single-stall garage is attached at the north end, with a flat roof. The exterior of the house is clad in stucco; the attached garage is sided with vertical boards. The primary façade faces south onto W Mendenhall St. A stuccoed chimney is centered on the house’s south gable front, bisecting the peak of the roof. The chimney appears to have been converted from a wood-burning fireplace to some other use, as indicated by a pyramidal steel cap topped with a decorative vent. The chimney is flanked by single-lite fixed windows. A nested-gable entry projects approximately four feet from the south elevation, at the west end of the façade. The door is accessed by a flight of six concrete steps. The steps are faced in brick on either side and have a metal railing. Further west, recessed from the front of the house, is an at-grade entry that provides access to the rear of the building, where the plan widens slightly. The east elevation contains two one-over-one-lite sash windows and a fixed awning window. There are also basement lites present on this elevation. One of the windows has an external A/C unit affixed to its lower opening, and several windows appear to contain modern vinyl or metal sash. A brick privacy fence extends from the east elevation toward the adjacent property. A narrow metal gate occupies the space between the east wall and the end of the fence. The west elevation has a series of one-over-one-lite modern sash windows and four basement lites. At the south end of the elevation, within the nested-gable entry, is a single fixed lite. A wood fence extends north-south along the west property boundary and a paved walkway extends north from the public ROW providing access to the recessed secondary entry. The north (rear) elevation consists of a single-stall garage addition with a full-width paneled sectional garage door. No other fenestration or ornament is present. The property is in good condition overall. The front (south) lawn is well-manicured. The north end of the property is paved for vehicle parking and access to the garage, with an east-west-trending alley. This property was first recorded 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, it was considered “a neutral element within a potential historic district.” This property is in good condition overall and retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 601 W MENDENHALL ST Site Number: 108 HISTORY OF PROPERTY William H. Tracy purchased this property from the United States on June 15, 1872. He platted it as Tracy’s 2nd Addition on May 16, 1883. This portion of Block E, Tracy’s 2nd Addition was rearranged on April 18, 2007. The house at 601 West Mendenhall Street sits on what was historically Lot 11 (see table). Prior to construction of the house, Charles and Lucille Callaghan purchased the property on June 12, 1895. Charles Callaghan was born in Joliet, Illinois on April 22, 1850. Callaghan first came to Silver Star, Montana Territory and engaged in mining and operating a hotel. His mining efforts had little success so he left Montana for Nevada, Indiana, and then Kansas. In the spring of 1880, he returned to Montana Territory via the Missouri River, landing in Fort Benton and traveling to Three Forks, which was at that time known as Bridgeville. He drove a stagecoach between Bozeman and Helena in 1881 and 1882 and then worked in railroad and highway contracting. On May 1, 1883 Charles married Lucille B. Monroe in Three Forks (Ancestry.com 2017). Lucille Monroe was born November 12, 1860 in Pennsylvania (Ancestry.com 2001). When she was still a small child the family moved to Kansas. When Lucille was 23 years old, she came to Montana to accept a job in Willow Creek, MT teaching school. Charles was ranching near Willow Creek at this time; the two met and were married in 1883 (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 16 January 1934) She lived in Gallatin County since c. 1884 and in Bozeman since c. 1899 (The Independent-Record 16 January 1934). In 1895, the family moved to a farm north of Bozeman. In 1910, Charles retired from the farm and moved into Bozeman, MT, and became County Commissioner of Gallatin County, a position he held for six years (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 17 July 1932; The Independent-Record 20 July 1934). Charles died in 1932 and Lucille died two years later in January of 1934, after a lingering illness (Findagrave.com 2004). She became seriously ill when she dislocated a shoulder while dressing. They are buried next to one another in the family plot in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). William C. Orton, James M. Orton, and Walter S. Orton purchased the property from the Callaghans on December 24, 1908. William, James, and Walter were brothers. William was born in Utah and James and Walter were born in Montana. In 1870, the three brothers were living with their parents, James and Paulona Orton. Their father James was a stonemason and a freighter, and their mother kept house. They lived with their other siblings, Oscar, Alfred, Van, and Fred in Virginia City, Montana Territory (Ancestry.com 2009). In c.1878-1879 the family moved to Butte, MT. The Orton family formed the Orton Brothers Music Company. Their father taught them music; he was an exceptional violin player. The brothers were widely known through the state of Montana and played as a cornet band for many events (The Montana Standard 28 October 1929). They had a very active music store in Butte, MT and satellite stores in Bozeman, Billings, and Great Falls (The Montana Standard 5 July 1976). Much of the family remained in Butte, but some of the family came to Bozeman, including Alfred and Wallace Orton. In Bozeman, they ran the Orton Music House (R. L. Polk & Co 1916). James A. Bridges purchased the property on June 8, 1931, after which time the house was built. James Albert Bridges was born in Versaille, Missouri on October 30, 1883. James came to Livingston, MT in 1908 and lived there until 1916 when he moved to Bozeman. James married Myrtle Lindley on June 2, 1909 in Livingston, MT. James and Myrtle owned and operated the Bridges Linoleum and Art Store in Bozeman. In 1919, the name changed to Alexander Art. They also started grocery businesses in Bozeman including the Fifth Avenue and the Evergreen groceries. In 1924, James and Myrtle opened the Bridges Donut Shop, which operated out of the Bridges’ home at 421 West Main Street until 1925 and at 601 West Mendenhall Street (R. L. Polk & Co 1959). In the 1930s, James and Myrtle moved into the building at 601 West Mendenhall Street and went into the potato chip manufacturing business (The Great Falls Tribune 28 April 1964). Stella Myrtle Lindley was born on August 20, 1891 in Missouri to Pitman and Viola Lindley. She worked as a baker and owned and operated a bakery and the Bridges Donut Shop during her lifetime (Ancestry.com 2017). James Bridges died on April 25, 1964 and Myrtle Bridges died on October 18, 1974 in Bozeman, MT. They are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). Myrtle Bridges sold the residence a few months after her husband died. The property has changed hands three times since, until the current owners - Stephen John and Pamela R. Blockey – bought the property in September 2007. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 4 History of Property Property Name: 601 W MENDENHALL ST Site Number: 108 Table 1. Chain of Title, 601 W. McDonald Architects. At that time, this property was considered “a neutral element within a potential historic district.” No notable changes have occurred since the previous recording. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic association with the Nationalization Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw the perpetuation of many earlier building practices, but also the rise of new streamlined styles, new construction, and infill (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 2nd Addition in order to evaluate district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 9 Integrity Property Name: 601 W MENDENHALL ST Site Number: 108 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) This site is in good condition, overall, and has experienced several changes over time. The replacement of historic windows with modern sash and the addition of the rear single-stall garage have affected integrity of materials and design. Integrity of setting has been impacted by the removal of surrounding residential structures including houses along the south side of W Mendenhall St. and the encroachment of commercial properties. Other aspects of integrity remain intact.
