Reference source not found. ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Queen Anne If Other, specify: Property Type: Miscellaneous Specific Property Type: Wilderness Society Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A The property at 503 West Mendenhall consists of two historical architectural features: a 2.5-story, wood-framed house built in 1893, which has been converted to offices, and a small wood-frame, gable-front garage. A modern, prefabricated steel, shed-roofed, three- stall garage has been erected at the northwest of the property. ]The house displays elements of the Queen Anne style, with a cross-gable roof, a rectangular footprint, and ornamentation in the front gable apex. There is a large modern 2.5-story addition to the north end of the building. The feature retains a roughly rectangular footprint with a concrete foundation. The roof is covered in asphalt shingles and the exterior is clad in horizontal steel siding. The primary façade faces south onto W. Mendenhall St. The west half of the façade is a gable-front with ornamentation in the front gable apex which appears to be wood and includes a divided sunburst and saw-tooth shingles, above a bracketed horizontal “shelf” that forms the top of an in-filled window. The east end of the façade is a recessed entry on a side-gabled ell. The entry is within a hipped-roof porch that spans the entire front of the house. The porch roof is supported by five turned-wood columns connected by a spindle railing. On the ground floor is a large fixed modern window with six graduated-size lites, placed within the original opening. Two single lite windows are on the second floor; these are also modern steel sash replacements and different in shape than the originals. The west elevation has three single one-over-one double-hung windows and one set of two one-over-one double-hung windows on the first story. All are modern. On the second story the same type of modern windows are used, and the six windows are spaced evenly across the elevation. A slight vertical recess can be seen defining where the original house meets the large rear addition. The east elevation has two gables: one on the south end that is part of the original house, and one that is located on the northern post-1984 addition. The original gable on the south end has a two-story bay with windows on each of the sides on both stories. The gables have vertical siding in the apexes. The east façade windows are one-over-one lite double-hung modern windows, spaced regularly. The house is set on a corner lot with large trees obscuring much of the east side of the property. The north elevation has an asymmetrical appearance, largely related to incorporating new construction onto the angles and roofline of the original house. This elevation resembles a two-story salt-box house form. An ADA-accessible wooden ramp affords access to the back door, and centered above each other on the first and second stories are modern one-over-one-lite sash windows matching the rest of the windows. The second feature is a single stall wood-framed garage with a gable roof. It is clad in clapboard siding and has asphalt shingles. The modern garage door is on the east elevation, and small windows are centered in the south, west, and north elevations. Likely the structure dates to around 1930, by which point automobiles had become a near necessity for daily life. The second garage is modern, with steel siding and a shed roof and three stalls. A modern three-stall garage clad with vertical metal siding and with a sheet-metal shed roof is located in the northwest corner of the property. The property is in overall excellent condition, despite substantial alterations that have occurred since it was originally recorded by James R. McDonald Architects in 1984. At that time, it was recommended that it could contribute to a potential district. Since then, changes have affected its integrity. Although the site is in excellent condition overall, Metcalf finds that it does not retain sufficient integrity to convey its historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 503 W MENDENHALL ST Site Number: Error! Reference source not found. HISTORY OF PROPERTY William H. Tracy purchased this property from the United States on June 15, 1872. He platted it as Tracy’s 2nd Addition on May 16, 1883. The residence on the property was built between 1892 and 1904 for George E. Davis. Davis, born in 1852 in Wales, came to the Springhill area in the Gallatin Valley, north of Bozeman, Montana, in 1878 (Findagrave.com 2004). In 1879, he married Catherine in Oneida, Idaho (Ancestry.com 2014). The two farmed in the Bozeman area until 1893 when they moved into Bozeman proper and had this residence built. In 1900, George Davis was elected as Gallatin County Commissioner. He sold the property 503 W. Mendenhall to Hiram Buell in 1907 (see table). Hiram Samuel Buell was born on July 9, 1861 in Independence, Iowa to Timothy and Mary Eunice Buell (Ancestry.com 2001). Olive M. Hart was born on February 14, 1866 in Humbolt County, Iowa to George and Ann (Tilson) Hart. Olive married Hiram Buell on October 5, 1885 and moved to Bozeman, MT in July of 1907 when they purchased this residence. They sold the residence in 1910 to Lula and W.A. Hall. Olive was active in Bozeman society life, including a period as president of the Women’s Society and state president of the Missionary society. She was an active Club woman, and is noted the first president of the Bozeman Woman’s Club. Hiram, along with Chris Korslund and others, organized the Buell Land Company. Buell was elected mayor of Bozeman in 1912 and served until 1915. In 1919, Hiram became the first president of the Security Bank and Trust Company, holding this position until his death in 1928 (The Great Falls Tribune 23 November 1960). In 1923, Buell was elected to the state house of representatives for two sessions (The Billings Gazette 25 July 1928). Hiram S. Buell died on July 24, 1928 and Olive Buell died in 1960 (The Billings Gazette 25 July 1928). They are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (Findagrave.com 2004). The Buell family owned this property only briefly. Lula F. and W. A. Hall purchased the property on November 26, 1910. The Hall family lived at this residence from 1912 until they sold it in 1918 (City of Bozeman Application for Water Service). William “Billy” Hall was born on April 30, 1861 in Hermitage, Missouri to Alexander and Elizabeth (Moore) Hall. Lula Brown was born on February 15, 1872 in Knobnoster, MO to James and Nancy (George) Brown. Billy settled in Paradise valley and in 1892 purchased a general store in Cinnabar, MT. He later moved to Gardiner, where he established a department store near the entrance to Yellowstone National Park. This store was hailed as the “...largest, finest department store in the west.” It had four rooms filled with “...everything from groceries to clothing, shoes, carpeting and furniture. The structure also housed the town’s post office and drug store (The Billings Gazette 5 September 2008). He divided his time between Gardiner and Belgrade where he had a large ranch” (Great Falls Tribune,12 August 1932). Billy died on June 24, 1931 in Bozeman. Lula Hall died on August 10, 1932 in Gardiner, MT. Lula and William are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (Ancestry.com, 2001). Lula and William Hall sold the property to their acquaintances, John F. and Zona Curl, on March 25, 1918 (The Butte Miner 26 October 1924). The Curls were living in the residence by 1918 according to the city directory, with their children Mary and Thomas who were attending Montana State Agricultural College (MSC). John Flenniken Curl was born on February 28, 1853 in Carmichaels, PA to Thomas and Mary (Flenniken) Curl. Arizona “Zona” Frazee Curl was born on January 18, 1862 in Saint Joseph, Missouri. John came to Montana, initially to Cook City, when he was thirty years old and engaged in the mining business. While in Cooke City he operated a hotel. He married Zona Frazee in Cooke City on June 5, 1890. John and Zona moved to Gardiner, MT where they operated a hotel, and then eventually moved to Bozeman, MT for their children to attend MSC. It is at this time they moved into this residence (The Butte Miner 2 October 1924). John died at the residence on October 1, 1924. Zona died on February 4, 1929 in New Haven, Connecticut where she was living with her son after the death of John. John and Zona are buried together in Mountain View Cemetery in Livingston, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). Henry and Mary E. Lux purchased the property on July 23, 1928. Henry and Mary Lux were both born in Hungary. Little information was obtained regarding their family, however, it is recorded that Henry was a cobbler who repaired shoes (R. L. Polk & Co. 1929). On July 29, 1941, Elizabeth W. and Harry C. Hansen purchased the property. Harry and Elizabeth did not live in the residence during their period of ownership. Homer W. and Myrtle B. Stoudt purchased the property on February 8, 1945, selling it to Jean and Alta McReynolds in 1955. Myrtle Cornell was born on July 25, 1884 in Sandwich, Illinois. Myrtle married Homer on August 17, 1904 in Kane, IL (Ancestry.com 2015). Myrtle and Homer came to Terry, Montana in 1910 and moved to Bozeman in 1940, purchasing this residence in 1945 (The Great Falls Tribune 3 October 1951). Homer was born in Dixon, IL on October 4, 1882 to Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Stoudt. Homer married Maude Hardestry on June 12, 1962 in Powell, Wyoming (The Billings Gazette 22 January 1966). While in Bozeman, Homer owned an electrical and plumbing contract business until his retirement in 1956 (The Billings Gazette 22 January 1966). Myrtle died on September 25, 1951 and is buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). Homer sold the house on November 17, 1951. He died on January 21, 1966 in Joliet, MT. Homer is also buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 4 History of Property Property Name: 503 W MENDENHALL ST Site Number: Error! Alta Little was born on October 5, 1902 to Wright and Agnes (McNamee) Little in Butte. Alta grew up in the Bozeman area, attending Bozeman schools. In adulthood, Alta was employed with the Bozeman Public School District in the lunchroom, retiring in 1967 to be a full-time homemaker. Alta married Joe McReynolds and they had two daughters, Jean and June. Jean was born on March 25, 1928 in Bozeman, graduating from Gallatin High School in 1946. She married James Baustadt on December 19, 1950 and they lived in Park County, MT (Ancestry.com 2017; Findagrave.com 2004). She moved back to Bozeman and worked as a secretary for the Gallatin County High School and for Bozeman Public Schools for 33 years, retiring in 1982. Jean is buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). The property was sold in 1983. The property changed hands several times after 1983. NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, he considered the structure to qualify as “a contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Village Phase of Bozeman’s historic/architectural development.” Since then, extensive changes have altered the property, affecting the integrity of design and materials of the historic residence. Although the site is in excellent condition overall, Metcalf finds that it does not retain sufficient integrity to convey its historic character. The site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria. It is found to lack individual significance for association with events that have made a contribution to the broad patterns of our history under Criterion A. The site is associated with a person of local note, Hiram Buell. Buell who purchased the property on July 1, 1907, was elected mayor of Bozeman in 1912 and served until 1915. In 1919, Hiram became the first president of the Security Bank and Trust Company. He held this position until his death in 1928. In 1923, Buell was elected to the state house of representatives for two sessions. However, Buell sold the property in 1910 and his brief association with this property would not qualify as significant under Criterion B. Under Criterion C, the site has experienced modifications that affect integrity such that it is no longer a strong representative example of a type, period, or method of construction. Under Criterion D, the site is not likely to yield information that would contribute significantly to our understanding of the past. Metcalf recommends the property not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Metcalf further recommends that if like-structures observed in the vicinity are found to constitute a potential district, this site would not contribute to its eligibility. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 9 Integrity Property Name: 503 W MENDENHALL ST Site Number: Error! Reference source not found. INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in excellent condition, overall, but extensive alterations have occurred since the 1984 survey. In particular, the massive north addition to the original building has compromised integrity of design, setting, and feeling. Use of modern materials has affected integrity of materials and workmanship. Overall, Metcalf finds the site no longer retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.
