Bartholomew Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: McDonald survey This property consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built in 1914 and later remodeled in 2010. The house is a wood- framed, 1.5-story structure with characteristics of the Craftsman bungalow style typical of early 20th century developments. Its original use was a single-family residential dwelling, but has since been converted to offices currently occupied by Elevated. It has a roughly rectangular plan, with a concrete foundation. The house has a side-gabled roof with a front facing gabled dormer centered in the south façade. The roof is clad in asphalt shingles, and a brick chimney extends up the east elevation past the roof line. There are also small box bays on the east and west elevations, with shed roofs. Rafter tails are exposed along gable sides and on shed roofed dormers. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood siding with wood shingles in the apex of the gables. The primary façade faces south, onto Main St. The primary entrance is off-centered on the west end of the south façade, within a deep recessed full-width front porch, which is accessed by a series of wood steps with brick corner posts. The brick corner posts, supporting the porch, end in paired battered wood posts. Most of the original windows are intact and consist of three-over-one-lite single-hung wood windows and basement casements/hoppers. The north elevation has a shed roofed dormer that appears to have been extended at some point. There is also a centered door on the back (north) elevation with an ADA wood ramp leading up to it. The property and site are well maintained. Vegetation in the front yard includes deciduous bushes on either side of the steps leading up to the front porch and primary entrance, and a large mature deciduous tree to the west of the structure. To the north and east of the structure is nothing but asphalt pavement for customer access from Main St. and parking for it and other surrounding businesses. The property was first recorded in August 1984, and the record was revised sometime between July and December 1985 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time (1984-85), the structure was described as slightly run down but retaining sufficient integrity “due to the survival of the original design and continuity of use, setting, and location.” According to the 1985 revision the house “was probably built for income producing purposes by the Henry Hellinger Estate,” but was used residentially until recently. Subsequent remodeling in 2010 has improved the site’s condition and has minimal effect on the appearance of exterior materials. Metcalf finds that it still retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 611 W MAIN ST Site Number: 077 HISTORY OF PROPERTY Prior to construction of the house at 611 W Main St, this property was part of lands William H. Tracy purchased from the United States on June 15, 1872. He platted the land as Tracy’s 1st Addition in 1872. Henry Hellinger purchased the property on May 5, 1903. Henry Hellinger was born on July 21, 1845 in Reading, PA. Hellinger fought in the Civil War under Company “C” 195th Pennsylvania Infantry. He had enlisted in July of 1864 and was discharged honorably in July of 1865. Henry Hellinger came to Montana Territory in 1866 and was employed by W. W. Alderson on a farm located one mile south of Bozeman. Henry married Mary Sales on November 20, 1876 (Ancestry.com 2016). Mary (Sales) Hellinger was born in Canada on November 3, 1855 to Zachariah and Eleanor (Shanks) Sales. She came to Montana Territory in 1864-1865 with her parents, who were the founders of the town of Salesville (which became Gallatin Gateway in 1927). The town had been founded on the Sales family homestead. Mary married Henry Hellinger on November 20, 1876 (Ancestry.com 2016). For a short time, they owned a ranch north of Bozeman where the fairgrounds are now located. They sold this 160-acre farm in 1890 for $15,000 (The Butte Daily Post 4 Apr 1890). They moved to 103 West Beall Street in Bozeman in 1890-1892 (The Billings Gazette 13 Aug 1931). Henry Hellinger died on June 27, 1914 and is buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com, 2004). Mary died on August 12, 1931 and is buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). The residence on this property was built in 1914, probably under the direction of Mary Hellinger as a source income following the death of her husband, as Mary continued to live at 103 West Beall Street in Bozeman, MT (R. L. Polk & Co 1916-1917). According to McDonald’s survey, the house was built by Elmer L. Bartholomew, an important builder in early 20th century Bozeman (Montana Historical and Architectural Inventory 1985). Louis Seifert purchased the property on June 16, 1922. Louis Seifert was born January 13, 1877 in Millersburg, Ohio to Herman and Pauline (Sommers) Seifert (Findagrave.com 2004). Louis was a farmer in Gallatin County. He married Anna Morgan on May 31, 1904. They divorced on April 4, 1928 and Anna assumed ownership of the property as a result of the divorce settlement (Ancestry.com 2016). Louis Seifert later married Francis Marie Payne on March 6, 1932 in Miles City, MT, and died on June 2, 1940 (Ancestry.com 2017). He is buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. Anna (Morgan), born on October 2, 1880, died on June 10, 1972. She is also buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. Clara I. Warwood purchased the property on May 28, 1945. Clara Isabelle (Turner) Warwood was born in 1892 and married Edmond Warwood in 1917. He died in 1943, prior to her purchase of the property. She appears to have resided here until her death in 1974, at which time she left the property to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (The Independent-Record 9 Dec 1943) Clara Warwood is buried in Reese Creek Cemetery in Gallatin County, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). The church sold the property in 1977 and it has had several owners since (see table). The current owners in 2020 are Bruce and Asako Brown. Table 1. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Statement of Significance Property Name: 611 W MAIN ST Site Number: 077 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property was first recorded in 1984 and then revised in 1985 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property was considered a “contributing element within a potential historic district.” The original 1984-85 surveys state that “the historic integrity of this property has been retained due to the survival of the original design and continuity of use, setting, and location.” In 2010, the property was remodeled and it is likely modern materials were used, though replacement of any original materials appear to have been made in-kind and with respect to the original character of the house. The site is in excellent condition overall, and Metcalf finds that it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic association with the Progressive Phase of Bozeman’s development, representative of a transitional period in residential design influenced by Progressive ideology (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 1st Addition in order to evaluate district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 8 Integrity Property Name: 611 W MAIN ST Site Number: 077 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in excellent condition, overall. All aspects of integrity have been retained, with the exception of integrity of setting, which has been impacted by the removal of contemporaneous residential structures on this block, and integrity of materials, which has been affected by alterations over time, including the application and subsequent removal of aluminum siding and remodeling in 2010. Metcalf finds that it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.
