The house is a 1.5-story wood-framed house with Classical Revival style elements including its symmetrical façade, closed-gable front, bracketed, flared eaves and fluted columns. The house has a roughly rectangular plan shape with a concrete foundation. Rusticated concrete blocks are visible on the west elevation, however, and appear to be the original foundation material since reinforced with modern concrete. The roof form is hipped, with flared eaves. It is clad in asphalt shingles. There are four dormers that pierce the roof: one on the west elevation, two on the east elevation and one on the north (rear) elevation. There is also a front-facing closed-gable wall dormer with flared eaves, centered on the south façade. The exterior walls are clad in asbestos shingle. The house faces south onto W. Main Street. The primary entrance is centered on this façade, within a full-width, hip-roofed porch that is accessed by a flight of wood steps. The porch is supported by a series of four fluted wood columns. The decoratively carved wood door has a fixed lite and is flanked by sidelites. The entry appears to be original and a second, added entry is immediately west, within what was originally a three-sided bay window. The windows have decorative leaded glass; the central window has been converted to a doorway with a standard side-hung door. At the far east end of the south façade is a large picture window with one-over-one-lite side lites and applied shutters. A wood storm window is affixed to the picture window. In the upper half story of the south façade, contained within the gabled wall dormer, is a bank of three single-lite modern windows, recently installed. In the apex of this gabled dormer is an oculus window with decorative wood trim. The east elevation has a boxed-bay near the north end of the building. This bay is hip-roofed with a pair of aluminum framed one- over-one-lite windows. To the north and south of the boxed bay is a one-over-one-lite window. All windows on the first story on this façade have applied shutters. In the upper half story, there is a flared, hip-roofed dormer that contains a modern two-lite sliding window. This dormer has been added onto, with a shed-roofed extension to the north. The extended portion of the dormer contains a single-lite modern window. The west elevation contains a one-over-one-lite aluminum framed window at the south end of the building and a bank of casement windows in a shallow boxed bay further north. In the upper half story, there is a pair of shed-roofed dormers. Both dormers contain a two-lite sliding window. The north elevation has a narrow dormer in the upper story, containing a single window. There is also a single-story hip-roofed addition on the north elevation that contains paired one-over-one-lite windows on its west elevation. The site is in fair condition. Deferred maintenance has lead to deterioration of exterior materials. Numerous alterations, including to windows and window openings have occurred. The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property was considered not individually eligible for inclusion in the NRHP, but qualified as a “contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Civic Phase of Bozeman’s historic, architectural development.” Metcalf finds the property is in fair condition and retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 607 W MAIN ST Site Number: 076 HISTORY OF PROPERTY Prior to construction of the house at 607 W Main St., William H. Tracy purchased this property from the United States on June 15, 1872. He platted the land as Tracy’s 1st Addition in 1872. Henry Hellinger purchased the property from William H. Tracy on May 5, 1903. Henry Hellinger was born on July 21, 1845 in Reading, Pennsylvania. Hellinger fought in the Civil War under Company “C” 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, after enlisting in July of 1864. He was discharged honorably in July of 1865. Henry Hellinger came to Montana Territory in 1866 and was employed by W. W. Alderson on his farm that was located a mile south of Bozeman. Henry married Mary Sales on November 20, 1876 (Ancestry.com 2016) Mary Sales was born in Canada on November 3, 1855 to Zachariah and Eleanor (Shanks) Sales. She came to Montana Territory in 1864-1865 with her parents, who were the founders of the town of Salesville (which became Gallatin Gateway in 1927). The town was founded on the Sales family homestead. Mary married Henry Hellinger November 20, 1876 (Ancestry.com 2016). For a short time, they owned a ranch north of Bozeman where the fairgrounds are now located. They sold this 160-acre farm in 1890 for $15,000 (The Butte Daily Post 4 April 1890). They moved to 103 West Beall Street in Bozeman in 1890-1892 (The Billings Gazette 13 August 1931). Henry Hellinger died on June 27, 1914 and Mary died on August 12, 1931 (Findagrave.com, 2004). Both are buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. Logan Reese Wells purchased this property on June 6, 1903 from the Hellingers. Wells built a residence on this property between 1903 and 1904 according to Sanborn maps and Gallatin County deed records (Sanborn Map Company Jul 1890, Jan 1904). Logan was born on January 11, 1875 at Reese Creek in Gallatin County, Montana. Logan Reese Wells served briefly in 1904 as alderman of Bozeman’s Second Ward. Wells was an assistant cashier at the Commercial National Bank in Bozeman, MT (R. L. Polk & Co. 1904, 1912, 1927). L. Reese Wells married Amy James on June 15, 1898 in Jackson, Missouri (Ancestry.com 2015). Amy James Wells was born on October 14, 1876 in Pittsfield, Illinois to Thomas and Mary Ellen (Williamson) James. L. Reese Wells died on November 30, 1939 and Amy died on September 25, 1942. Both died in Independence, MO and are buried in Mound Grove Cemetery (Findagrave.com 2004). J. F. and Martha A. Feazell purchased this property on September 2, 1905. John was born on August 16, 1856 in Ohio. John married Martha Burrus on September 30, 1877 at Mount Etna, Adams County, Iowa. They moved to Bozeman in 1902 and lived there until 1917 when they moved to Long Beach, California and then to Los Angeles, CA in 1924 (Adams County Free Press 20 April 1928). While living in Bozeman, John worked at the Bozeman Elevator Co. in Bozeman, MT (R. L. Polk & Co. 1906). Martha died in 1928 in Los Angeles, CA and John died on December 22, 1945, also in Los Angeles, CA. They are buried together in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, CA (Findagrave.com 2004). W. H. H. and Juan Ellis purchased the property on June 8, 1911. William H. H. Ellis was born on January 26, 1841 in Weston, Platte County, Missouri to Benedict and Edith (Vaughn) Ellis. In June of 1861, William enlisted and fought in the Civil War. After the war, he went back to Weston, MO and worked various jobs before heading west to Montana in 1871. He traveled on the Union Pacific to Corinne, Utah and then by stagecoach to Bozeman, arriving on September 19, 1871. On October 4 he filed a claim on eighty acres of land in Gallatin valley. In 1875, he helped build the second Crow Agency near present-day Absarokee, MT. On January 26, 1882 he married Juan Daugherty in Bozeman, MT. Juan Daugherty was born on May 5, 1849 in Kentucky to Charles and Margaret (Jones) Daugherty (A.W. Bowen & Co page 760-761). Juan died on June 1, 1915 and William died on January 11, 1917. William and Juan are buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com, 2004). William H. H. Ellis owned this property when he died. J. H. Sloan was named as executor of his will, and T. B. Ellis, his brother, was the only heir at law. T.B. Ellis contested the probate, arguing that William H. H. Ellis was not in sound mind when he signed the codicil to his will. He contended that Ellis had sustained a head injury from a fall in 1908 and a stroke in 1913, which left him mentally unsound. T. B Ellis maintained that his brother had been operating under the undue influence of Blanche A. Sloan (died April 8, 1917), Emily Daugherty, Mattie A. Daugherty (sisters of W. H. H. Ellis’s deceased wife) and J. H. Sloan (son of Blanche Sloan) when he wrote the codicil to his will. T. B. Ellis then died while contesting the will, leaving his wife Ada Ellis to continue the dispute. The judge ruled in favor of J. H. Sloan, and the property was divided in 1/3 interests to Mattie Daugherty, Emily Daugherty, and heirs of Blanche A. Sloan (Ancestry.com 2015). Mary E. and C. C. McBroom purchased the property on March 31, 1919. Carl C. McBroom was born on November 9, 1862 in Iowa to Robert and Susannah (Winters) McBroom. Carl McBroom married Mary E. Skerritt on November 25, 1903 in Bozeman, MT (Ancestry.com 2017). While living at this residence, Carl was listed as a farmer (R. L. Polk & Co. 1927). Carl died on October 19, 1952 in San Bernardino, California and is buried, together with Mary E. McBroom, in Springhill Cemetery in Springhill, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 4 History of Property Property Name: 607 W MAIN ST Site Number: 076 Louise Jensvold purchased the property on September 9, 1933. McDonald Architects.at that time, the property was recommended not individually eligible, but contributing to a potential district. The site is in fair condition overall, and Metcalf finds that it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic association with the Civic Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw growing variety and refin ement of residential architectural styles (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 1st Addition in order to evaluate district potential.
