The house is a modest Queen Anne style residence that has been extensively remodeled. The house is asymmetrical, but has a rectangular plan shape, with a concrete foundation. The roof is cross-gabled and clad in asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are covered in horizontal cedar drop siding, with raked wood siding in the gables. The primary entrance is located on the east end of the north façade and consists of a standard wood door accessed by a flight of wood steps. The door does not appear to be original; rather, it has characteristics of the Arts and Crafts style, including a fixed art-glass window. The entry is located within a shed-roofed enclosed porch that fills the reentrant corner of the transecting gables. To the west of the entry is a gable-front volume with a pair of casement windows. Another single-lite casement window is further west on the north façade. The east elevation has a gabled volume toward the south, with a pair of casement windows. On the north end of the elevation, within the enclosed porch, there are three large fixed, single-lite windows. A single-lite casement window is located on the north end of the west elevation, but any other fenestration on this side of the building was obscured by vegetation, including a large Boxelder tree in the front lawn. The south (rear) elevation of the house contains a secondary entrance at the east end. This entry consists of a steel paneled door with a single fixed lite. It is accessed by a series of concrete steps. To the west of the rear doorway is a narrow one-over-one-lite window. No other fenestration is located on the south elevation. South of the house is a paved parking space that opens south, onto an east-west trending alley. On the southeast corner of the lot is a wood-framed, gable-roofed two-stall garage, built c. 1930. The garage has a rectangular plan shape with a concrete slab foundation. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal drop siding and the roof is covered in what appear to be weathered, moss-covered wood shingles. The garage has two paneled sectional garage doors opening south, on the gable end. The site is in good condition overall. However, changes to the exterior of the house, including replacement of the original windows with metal-framed casements, replacement of the front door, and the installation of cedar drop siding are not in keeping with the age and style of the building. These changes have affected integrity of materials, design, workmanship, feeling, and association. The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDondald Architects. At that time, the property was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” While the site remains in good condition, Metcalf concurs with the previous recommendation that alterations to the property have compromised the site’s ability to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 614 W LAMME ST Site Number: 067 HISTORY OF PROPERTY Prior to construction of this residence, this property was part of William H. Tracy’s landholdings, purchased from the United States on June 15, 1872. He platted the land as Tracy’s 2nd Addition on May 16, 1883. George and Lizzie R. Foerschler purchased the property on December 20, 1898. George Foerschler was born on June 20, 1850 in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. George married Elizabeth “Lizzie” Bogeler on August 18, 1873. Lizzie Bogeler was born in New York on August 24, 1856 (Findagrave.com 2004). Lizzie and George came to Montana in 1881 (The Anaconda Standard 16 Dec 1914). Lizzie died on December 14, 1914. George and Lizzie are both buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). George and Lizzie Foerschler sold the property to Arnold B. Carow on April 9, 1900. Arnold Carow sold the property back to George and Lizzie Foerschler on March 26, 1903 and they owned it until June 26, 1905 when they sold it to A. M. Snell. The residence was built on the property at this time, based on Sanborn Map records and Gallatin County deed records. A. M. and Hettie Snell purchased the property June 26, 1905. Andrew Martin Snell was born in January of 1858 in Indiana. Andrew Snell and Hettie Brady were married on March 24, 1889 in Crow Creek Valley, Jefferson County, MT (Ancestry.com 2017). Hettie Brady was born in Urbana, Benton County, Iowa on March 3, 1873. By 1892, the couple was living in a log cabin in Livingston, MT (The Hanford Sentinel 3 Feb 1992). In 1917, the Snell family moved to California where Andrew farmed in the Lemoore, CA area. Andrew died on March 29, 1936 and Hettie died on December 22, 1956; both died in Hanford, Kings County, CA and are buried in Hanford Cemetery (Findagrave.com 2004). Lottie M. and Charles A. Colbern purchased the property on March 5, 1909. Lottie Mae Hizer was born February 28, 1873 in Iowa. In 1908, Charles was the president of Bozeman Butchering L S & C Company (R. L. Polk & Co 1908). By 1920, the Colbern family had moved to Corona, CA and had sold the property in Bozeman to Earl and Margaret J. White. In California, Charles worked as a fruit rancher and a building contractor (Ancestry.com 2010). Charles served as Mayor of Corona, CA for a time and died on December 25, 1935 at the age of 63 (Los Angeles Times 25 Dec 1935). Lottie Colbern died on June 1, 1955 in Ventura, CA. Charles and Lottie are buried together in Corona Sunnyslope Cemetery in Corona, CA (Findagrave.com 2004). The White family lived here only briefly, before selling the property to its most notable occupant, E. G. B. Hill, in 1925. Emory G. B. Hill was born in Sharpsburg, Maryland on April 22, 1847 to Joseph Hill and Mary Catherine (Bach) Hill (Ancestry.com 2001). Emory G. B. Hill married Elizabeth Smith on October 15, 1871 in Duncannon, PA (Ancestry.com 2011). Elizabeth “Lizzie” Smith was on September 7, 1847 in Newport, Pennsylvania (The Billings Gazette, 4 Dec 1930). Emory arrived in Bozeman in 1890 to work as an engineer for the local railroad. In 1924, Emory Hill was elected to Bozeman’s City Commission. In 1928, Hill became Mayor of Bozeman and served until 1929 (City of Bozeman document). Elizabeth Hill died in 1930 and Emory Hill died in 1935; they are buried together in Sunset Hill's Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). George D. and Blanch C. Norman purchased the property on August 24, 1936. George D. Norman was born on July 19, 1895 in Belgrade, MT to Theo and Josephine Norman. Blanch C. Norman was born in 1900. George and Blanch (Hollen) Norman were married on November 16, 1920 in Bozeman, MT (Ancestry.com 2016). Blanch Norman died in Mesa, Arizona in 1993 and George died in 1976; they are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). James E. and Carrie M. Moore purchased the property on June 7, 1943. James Edwin Moore was born on February 1, 1871 in Plattsburg, Clinton County, Missouri to Lawson Smith Moore and Carrie May (Price) Moore. James and Carrie Moore married June 18, 1899 in Gallatin County, MT. Carrie May (Williams) Moore was born on January 12, 1879 in Sheridan, Madison County, Montana to Howard and Mary Williams (Ancestry.com 2017). Carrie died on April 8, 1956. James Moore died on September 2, 1956 in Bozeman, MT. James and Carrie are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). Delmer and Cleo Moore purchased the property on March 17, 1955. James Delmer Moore was the son of James and Carrie Moore. Delmer Moore was born in 1911. In 1938, Delmer married Cleo Kannegaard. Cleo Kannegaard was born in Wilsall, MT on September 22, 1917 to Raymond and Sadie (Watson) Kannegaard. Cleo’s mother succumbed to the 1918 flu epidemic when Cleo was only 18 months old. Cleo was raised by her maternal grandmother, Mary Watson and her uncle Bill Watson. Cleo lived at Fort Ellis while growing up, as her uncle Bill was the manager of the Fort Ellis research station at the time. Delmer and Cleo owned a farm north of Belgrade in the Pass Creek/Menard area. They farmed for 40 years. Delmer Moore died in 1975. After Delmer’s death, Cleo married Don Burton. Cleo died on July 16, 2010 (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 18 July 2010). Delmer and Cleo are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 8 Statement of Significance Property Name: 614 W LAMME ST Site Number: 067 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE This property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the site was recommended not eligible on the basis of integrity. Metcalf finds the site is in good condition, but alterations have compromised integrity of materials, design, workmanship, and feeling, with a comprehensive effect on integrity of association. The site no longer retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character in reference to associations with events that have made a contribution to the broad patterns of our history under Criterion A. Under Criterion B, the site has known historic associations with former Bozeman Mayor E.G.B. Hill. Hill served as a City Commissioner for several years and as Mayor from 1928-1929. During his time as a public servant, Hill and his family resided at the house at 614 W Lamme St. However, very little documentation has been found regarding his tenure as Mayor of Bozeman and, especially considering the site’s loss of integrity, Metcalf does not find that this association is of sufficient importance to satisfy Criterion B. Under Criterion C, the site is no longer a representative example of a type, period, or method of design and construction and it is unlikely that the site would yield information important to our understanding of the past in reference to Criterion D. Metcalf recommends this site not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Furthermore, in consideration of contemporaneous residential properties in the immediate vicinity, this property should be considered a non-contributing element within a potential historic district.
