The house was built during the emergence of the Minimal Traditional style and bears some resemblance to others of that type in its massing and materials; however, it also exhibits elements of Colonial Revival architecture, such as its symmetrical façade, raised entry vestibule, and its roof shape consisting of a side-gable with a centered closed gable-front. The house has a rectangular plan and concrete foundation. The roof is cross-gabled and covered in asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are clad in asbestos shingles, with painted particle board in the closed gable centered on the façade. The primary façade faces north, onto W Lamme St. A small cross gabled and enclosed front entryway is centered on the façade, and is accessed by concrete steps with concrete cheek walls. The main entry is a side-hung paneled wood storm door, flanked by three- over-two-lite windows. Pairs of identical windows are on the east and west walls of the entry vestibule. Further east and west, on the north façade, are additional pairs of divide-lite windows, with wood storms affixed at the time of survey. The east elevation contains a bank of three square lites at shoulder height towards the north of the elevation. Additional divided-lite single-hung windows are further south and two basement lites are also visible. The west elevation also contains basement lites, as well as single-hung windows. The south (rear) elevation contains an at-grade entrance, near center. The entry is covered by a narrow extension of the side-gabled roof which forms an awning supported at the southwest corner by a square wood post. To the west of the entry are two six-over-one- lite single-hung windows. At the east end of the elevation is a gable containing similar divided-lite single-hung windows. A narrow paved walkway extends straight south from the rear entry through the backyard toward the east-west-trending alleyway. The second feature, a two-stall detached garage, is located to the south of the house along the alleyway. It has a front gabled roof, and two sectional vehicle entries. The northern stall on the east façade has a row of square glass panels across the top of the vehicle entry door. Its exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood siding, and coils of barbed-wire hang on the south elevation. The primary façade faces east, parallel to the alleyway. A small fixed window is located on the southern end of the west elevation. The site is in excellent condition, overall and retains all aspects of integrity. The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” While the site remains in excellent condition, Metcalf finds that its date of construction is more recent than surrounding residences. Metcalf recommends that further research be done regarding Tracy’s 2nd Addition to determine district potential and establish a period of significance for the area to determine whether or not this property would contribute. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 610 W LAMME ST Site Number: 065 HISTORY OF PROPERTY William H. Tracy purchased this property from the United States on June 15, 1872. He platted it as Tracy’s 2nd Addition on May 16, 1883. A residence was built on this property in 1938, according to Sanborn maps and the City of Bozeman application for water service (Sanborn Map Company Sep 1927). A brief overview of previous owners of the property is as follows: Martin Harris purchased the property on February 19, 1901. Martin Harris was born in Missouri c.1843. Harris was a freighter and it was recorded in his obituary that, “...he came to Bozeman one winter with a load of goods when the thermometer was 40 degrees below zero. He camped on the outskirts of town and slept that night under the wagon on his bed, which he carried (The Great Falls Tribune 2 February 1906).” Harris died of cancer of the stomach in Bozeman, MT on September 20, 1904 (The Butte Miner 23 September 1904). Harris saved all his money over his lifetime and when he died in 1904 his estate was worth $50,000 (The Great Falls Tribune 2 February 1906). Dr. David H. and Katherine W. Patterson acquired the property in 1904, following the death of Martin Harris. David Patterson was born on September 9, 1864 in Riceville, Iowa (Findagrave.com 2004). He married Katherine Weaver on November 24, 1896 in Riceville. Katherine was born on March 11, 1876 in Riceville to Gideon and Elizabeth (Smith) Weaver (Findagrave.com 2004). By 1900, the two had moved to Gallatin County where David worked as a surgeon and physician in both Manhattan and Bozeman (Ancestry.com 2014; Findagrave.com 2004). Martin Harris was a patient of Dr. David Patterson. Deed 81/162 mentions: “Said lots being decreed to me in the matter of the estate of Martin V. Harris, deceased, and selected for the erection of a Sanitarium in accordance to the terms of the Last Will and testament of said deceased, of record in Book 1 of Decrees on page 404 and dated January 30th, 1906.” But a sanitarium was never built on these lots. In 1919, Dr. David Patterson semi-retired and moved to Long Beach, California with his wife (Independent-Press Telegram 4 September 1955). David and Katherine sold this property to Ernest E. and Inez D. Clack on April 30, 1937. David died on September 3, 1955 and Katherine died on June 9, 1956. They are buried together in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, CA (Findagrave.com 2004). Ernest East Clack was born on February 16, 1904 in Bozeman, MT to Hugh and Bertha Clack. In 1942, Ernest worked for James Fitzgerald Jr. at the West Side Grocery (Ancestry.com 2011). Ernest married Inez C. Davis on April 9, 1927 in Livingston, MT (Ancestry.com, 2017). Inez Carol Davis was born on September 15, 1905 in Salesville, Montana to Stanley Archer Davis and Lora (Williams) Davis. Inez worked as a bookkeeper at Riddle’s, a women’s clothing store (R. L. Polk & Co 1940), and as a stenographer in Bozeman (R. L. Polk & Co 1944). Inez died on May 5, 1992 in Shasta, CA (Ancestry.com 2000). Ernest and Inez Clack, the first occupants of the house at 610 W Lamme St., sold the property to Daniel H. and Ernestine T. March on January 4, 1977. Table 1. McDonald Architects. At that time, the site was considered an “intrusive element within a potential district.” Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic association with the Nationalization Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw perpetuation of many earlier building practices but also the rise of new streamlined design, new construction, and infill (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 2nd Addition in order to evaluate district potential.
