Architectural Description

ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
Architectural Style: Queen Anne If Other, specify:
Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling
Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown
Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown
Source of Information: N/A
This site consists of three historical features: a two story Queen Anne-style house built c. 1920, a Quonset structure added to the
property after 1940, and a detached garage added to the property in 1968. The house is wood-framed, and has a roughly L-shaped
plan with a mix of fieldstone and concrete foundation. The roof has a gable-L shape and is clad in asphalt shingles. A shed roof
hangs over the covered front porch on the reentrant corner. There also appears to be a shed roofed addition on the north elevation,
which in the Montana Cadastral records is described as an enclosed porch addition. The addition is only visible from an oblique view
from the public ROW facing northwest. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood siding, with natural and scalloped wood
shingles in the eaves of the gables. Vertical wood siding is in the eave of the shed roof over the porch.
The main façade faces south, onto W Lamme St. The primary entry is located on a canted wall of the front porch, which faces
southeast. The front porch is a later addition (date unknown) which consists of a wood deck, accessed by wood steps on the southern
end, with two turned wood posts supporting the end of the shed roof. A picture window with lead glass transom is on the south
façade, and is the only original window noted. Some new openings have been made, i.e. the front door and the canted wall are not
original. The newer windows consist of double hung and fixed lites. The east elevation second story wood-railed, bracketed balcony
is also not original.
A gable-front, single-stall garage is located to the north of the house, and appears to be converted to use as living or working space. It
is a front gabled structure with asphalt shingles covering the roof. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood siding and vertical
wood siding in the eave of the front gable. The primary entry appears to be modern glass French doors on the east end of the south
façade, with large windows to the west.
According to the Montana Cadastral records, the property also contains a Quonset-style structure, which is located behind or to the
north of the detached garage. It was not visible at the time of this survey from the public ROW, but it is slightly visible on the site
map despite being obscured by multiple deciduous trees with overhanging branches. No further description could be made.
The site is in fair condition. Vegetation in the front yard includes a large mature deciduous tree on the southern side of the public
sidewalk on the south side of the house, and multiple deciduous bushes and trees which divide this property from the property to the
west. More mature deciduous trees appear to be located on the north end of the property, behind or north of the detached garage.
The property was first recorded in August, 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. The Quonset structure was not mentioned, nor
was the addition on the north elevation of the house or the second story balcony. The primary entrance was also described as an
“offset side-facing front entrance,” which has changed to the angled location off the canted wall since then. At that time, the property
was considered to be a “contributing element within a potential historic district.” Metcalf has re-evaluated the property and finds the
site is in fair condition overall, and while it has seen several modifications, it still does retain several key aspects sufficient to convey
historic character.

History of Property
Property Name: 517 W LAMME ST Site Number: 058
HISTORY OF PROPERTY
William H. Tracy purchased this property from the United States on June 15, 1872. He platted the land as Tracy’s 3rd Addition on May
16, 1883, prior to construction of the house here. William and Sarah Tracy sold these lots to William H. Stevens on September 12,
1904. William H. Stevens was born on May 18, 1853 to James and Mahala Stevens in Missouri (Ancestry.com 2001). William
Stevens married Mary Ellen Gray, who was born on December 10, 1860 in Wayne County, MO. Mary Ellen died on March 10, 1919
of influenza during a “renewed” epidemic that broke out in Bozeman in 1919 (The Anaconda Standard 1919). William died on
February 12, 1935. William and Mary are both buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT.
Erastus H. Williams purchased the property on February 18, 1907. Williams likely built the house on this property sometime in 1907,
based on consideration value in the deed records. There is no house on this property in 1904 according to the Sanborn maps. Erastus
Haven Williams was born October 28, 1882 in Beattyville, Kentucky to James and Mrs. Williams. Williams was employed by the
postal service in Bozeman for many years. On July 30, 1905, Erastus Williams married Virginia “Jennie” Rainey in Bozeman, MT
(Ancestry.com 2017).
On May 30, 1901, Williams enlisted as a private in the Second Montana, which became the 163rd infantry. He served as private,
corporal, sergeant, captain, lieutenant colonel, and colonel until his death. He became captain of Company A, 3rd battalion, 2nd
Montana infantry on March 11, 1910. In 1916, Erastus Williams commanded and served as captain of A Company of the regiment
during the Mexican Border campaign in Douglas, Arizona. In 1917, he was promoted to major and commanded a battalion during
WWI. While serving overseas he commanded the 3rd battalion of the 163rd infantry. He was in command of a regiment in France until
given the special, and dangerous, assignment of destroying ammunition dumps at the front (The Independent-Record 15 June 1930).
After the war Williams returned to Bozeman and served as deputy sheriff in Gallatin County and as police magistrate in Bozeman
(The Independent-Record 14 February 1937). Colonel Erastus H. Williams became the adjutant general and commanding officer of
the Montana National Guard and served in that capacity for twelve years. Upon his deathbed, Williams requested that appropriation
bills for the National Guard that were before the legislature be given to him to study. As he realized he was near the end of his life, he
requested that his family members be brought to him so he could say goodbye (Independent-Record 18 February 1937). After his
death on February 13, 1937, the Montana legislature paid their respects to Colonel Williams by holding his funeral service within the
Capitol building in Helena, MT. The newspaper reported, “Before crowded galleries, the body of Montana’s adjutant general was
escorted into the house chambers by a detail from regimental headquarters company of the national guard. Officers stood at attention
around the flag-draped, bronze casket as Governor Roy E. Ayers, John E. Erickson, former governor and United State senator, and
Sam V. Stewart, Montana’s war-time governor, were escorted to the rostrum.” After the ceremony, Colonel Williams’ casket was
rolled into the Capitol’s rotunda, where it remained in state for half an hour. The body was then transported back to Bozeman where
an additional funeral service was held (The Independent-Record 18 February 1937).
Colonel Williams was highly respected by all those who worked with him. He “was always a friend of the ex-service man, level
headed in action and admired by his fellow soldiers. Under his leadership, the 163rd infantry was built up until it ranked as one of the
most efficient national guard regiments in the United States” (The Independent-Record 18 February 1937).
Erasmus and Jennie Williams sold the property to Charles Woosley on August 17, 1927. Charles Woosley was born in Sedan, MT on
May 31, 1897. Charles worked as an auto mechanic in Bozeman. Charles’ future wife, Ruby Leona Stevens, was born to Luman
Dwight and Edna Henriette (Blanchard) Stevens near Decorah, Iowa in Winneshiek County on August 19, 1896 (Findagrave.com
2004). Charles married Ruby Stevens on June 6, 1917 in Bozeman, MT. Charles Woosley died on May 19, 1981 in Monroe,
Snohomish County, Washington. Charles and Ruby Woosley are buried together in Evergreen Cemetery in Everett, WA
(Findagrave.com 2004).
Charles and Ruby Woosley sold the property to Diana Nyhoff Pesman on October 17, 1935. Diana Nyhoff was born in the
Netherlands on May 15, 1880. She immigrated to the United States in 1900 and married Onno Peter Pesman in New Mexico. Otto and
Diana moved to Ballantine, MT in 1909. Otto Pesman was a civil engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation and Diana was a trained
nurse. They lived at the Huntley Project until Otto’s death in 1946, after which Diana moved to Mildred, MT (The Billings Gazette 4
July 1961). Diana Pesman died on July 1, 1961 and is buried in Mountview Cemetery in Billings, MT.
Diana Pesman sold the property to Katherine M. Paddock on August 15, 1939. Katherine (McDonald) Paddock was born on April 21,
1893 in Montana. She died on December 16, 1968 in Los Angeles, CA. (Ancestry.com 2000) She was married to John McDonald on
November 7, 1920 in Bozeman, MT (Ancestry.com 2016).

Katherine Paddock sold the property to Effie Coulston on October 24, 1941. Effie Coulson quickly sold the property to Elizabeth Ann
Walker. Elizabeth Ann Walker was born on July 13, 1881 in Lee County, Kentucky to John Wesley and Amanda J. Edens. She died
on October 20, 1950 and is buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT.
The property was bought and sold many times in quick succession after Effie Coulston’s ownership. As of 2019, the property is
owned by Charles C. Fjeld.

Statement of Significance
Property Name: 517 W LAMME ST Site Number: 058
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
NRHP Listing Date:
NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District
NRHP Criteria: A B C D
Area of Significance: Period of Significance:
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property was considered a “contributing
element within a potential historic district.” There appear to have been several changes since this previous survey, mainly the addition
on the north elevation, the change in the primary entrance, changes in some of the windows and openings, and the second story
balcony on the east elevation.
Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or
State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been
evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site
has associations with an area resident with a notable career in both public service and the military, Col. Erasmus H. Williams. This
association has been determined insufficient to merit individual eligibility of the site for inclusion in the NRHP. The site is not located
within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar
structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic association with the Civic Phase of
Bozeman’s development, which saw growing variety and refinement of residential architectural styles (RTI 2008). Metcalf
recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 3rd Addition in order to evaluate district potential.

Integrity
Property Name: 517 W LAMME ST Site Number: 058
INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association)
The site is in fair condition, overall. It retains most aspects of integrity despite some of its additions and modifications. The
modification of the original windows and openings, including the main entry, the addition on the north elevation, and the second story
balcony affect integrity of materials and design. The drop siding also shows failing paint and dry rot around the windows. The
original fish scale shingles are intact but otherwise, deferred maintenance and alterations have slightly affected the integrity of
materials, design, and workmanship. Metcalf finds that despite these issues, it retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic
character in reference to early 20th century housing development in central Bozeman.
