The building has no embellishments associated with an architectural style. It has a rectangular plan shape, a concrete foundation and is clad in corrugated steel sheets on the secondary elevations and horizontal steel siding on the façade. It has a low-pitched gable roof, with overhanging eaves on the gable front. The roof appears to be clad in steel, though it was unable to be seen clearly from the public right-of-way. The building’s primary façade faces north onto W Beall St. The entry is off-center and contained within a shed-roofed vestibule of tinted-glass windows. To the east of the entry is a bank of three fixed tinted-glass windows. A concrete retaining wall in front of the building contains a mixture of small plants and shrubs; to the east of the retaining wall is an ADA-accessible concrete ramp that leads to the main entry. The west elevation contains two-lite sliding windows. The east elevation is partially obscured from the public right-of-way. The south elevation was not observed at the time of inventory, but has a full-width shed-roofed addition. Overall, the site is in excellent condition. Few changes appear to have been made. The site has not been recorded previously, though James R. McDonald did survey the adjacent property, 608 W Beall St., in 1984. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 522 W BEALL ST Site Number: 047 HISTORY OF PROPERTY Prior to the construction of a building here, William H. Tracy purchased this property from the United States on June 15, 1872. He platted the land as Tracy’s 3rd Addition on May 16, 1883. William and Sarah Tracy sold these lots to Green B. Williams on August 14, 1891. This property originally consisted of an area that fronted onto both Lamme Street and Beall Street. A residence was built on the property facing Lamme Street in 1891-1892, possibly by Green B. Williams (Sanborn Map Company Jul 1890, Jan 1904). The address at that time was 521 W. Lamme Street (see information on 521 W. Lamme Street property record form). Emma Fjeld purchased the property on May 27, 1948. Emma Gilbertson was born in Portland, North Dakota on December 2, 1887 to Gilbert and Lisa Gilbertson and married Carl Fjeld of Northwood, IA in 1908 in Roseu County, MN (Ancestry.com 2001). The family owned the property only briefly. Carl Emil Jr. and Mary Lou Fjeld purchased the property on October 22, 1948. Mary Lou Fjeld was born in Havre, MT to Lorene and Charles C. Harper on January 30, 1921. Carl Fjeld was born on September 29, 1918 in Scobey, MT to Carl E. Fjeld Sr. and Emma (Gilbertson) Fjeld. Mary Lou and Carl Fjeld owned Lake Paint and Glass in Bozeman, MT from the 1950s to the 1970s (Ancestry.com 2001). The business, Lake Paint and Glass, was operated out of the structure at 521 W. Lamme in 1950, but the location moved to 166 W. Main Street by 1954 (R. L. Polk & Company 1950, 1954). Mary Lou Fjeld died on March 15, 2018 (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 8 April 2018). Carl Fjeld died on June 24, 2005 (Ancestry.com 2001). Charles Carl and Sheril S. Fjeld obtained the property on June 6, 1972. That year, a commercial structure was built on the north side of the lot facing Beall Street, with the address of 522 Beall Street. In 1973 this property was subdivided. The north 42 feet of Lots 9 and 10 and the west 56 feet of lots 24 and 28 of Block E of Tracy’s 3rd Addition were split away from the original property boundaries. According to city directories, the building that was constructed facing Beall Street in 1972 was occupied by Lake Paint and Glass Company from 1972 to 1981. From 1982 to 1985 it was Lake Glass, Inc. The International Church of the Foursquare Gospel purchased the property on March 25, 1986. From 1986 to 2000 the structure was occupied by Hope Chapel and Foursquare Church. In 2001, it became the Beth Israel Messianic and Hope Chapel. From 2003 to 2012 the occupant was listed as River Valley Christian Fellowship (R. L. Polk & Co 1972 – 2012). Harte Properties LLC purchased the property on February 16, 2017. Beall Street Studios LLC, the current owner, as of November 2019, purchased the property on October 30, 2017. Table 1. It was built in 1972 and is approaching the fifty-year threshold for historic significance. It is found to lack individual significance for association with events that have made a contribution to the broad patterns of our history under Criterion A. The site lacks direct association with persons of historical significance under Criterion B. Under Criterion C, the site does not represent significant characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction. Under Criterion D, the site is not likely to yield information that would contribute to our understanding of the past. Metcalf recommends this site not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Integrity Property Name: 522 W BEALL ST Site Number: 047 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) This site is in excellent condition and retains most aspects of integrity. The glass vestibule on the north façade is likely a later addition, but does not detract from the site’s character.
