This property consists of a modern house built in 1990. The house is a wood-framed, single-story duplex with characteristics of the
Ranch style. It has a rectangular plan, with a concrete foundation. The house has a side gabled roof, covered in asphalt shingles. An attached garage is at the center of the duplex, with a front-gabled roof. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood siding and a
brick veneer mainly around the garages and front entrances. The two housing units of the duplex are separated by a central garage, one to the north and one to the south.
Both of the primary entrances to the housing units face west, onto 6th Ave., and both are accessed by a flight of shallow concrete
steps. The original windows have been replaced, but the openings appear to be intact. The window types observed from the public ROW include a large picture window on either side of the garage section, and casement windows on the north and south end of the
front façade and the north exterior wall.
The central two stall garage, with a living unit to either side, projects slightly from the face of the building. The garage has secondary access from the north and south elevations and the vehicle entries consist of sectional doors.
The site is well maintained. Vegetation in the front yard includes a manicured lawn, a mature deciduous tree in front of the northern
unit, and shaped deciduous bushes along the front façade of both units. More shaped deciduous bushes can be seen from the public ROW in the northern unit. Mature deciduous and coniferous trees are located in the backyard, to the east of the house.
The site is in excellent condition overall, but has not reached the fifty year threshold to be considered a historic property.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY Prior to construction of the house at 424 N 6th Ave, the property originally had been purchased and owned by William Beall and was
later platted as the Violett Addition by Lena E. Border, Harvey E. Murdock, and Ina I. Murdock on May 12, 1941 (Table 1).
That year, the lot was purchased by Harry Van Dyken, who owned the Van Dyken Drilling Company, specializing in “Home, ranch, irrigation and industrial water wells, well pumps, sales and service” (R.L. Polk & Co. 1954). Harry’s son, Burt H. Van Dyken, eventually took over the company. In the mid-1950s, he built a shop on this location for the
business. In 1976, Klaas Andriesen, an employee of the Van Dyken’s, purchased the business with his son-in-law Bernie Westra. They appear on the property records as having ownership of this property by 1980.
Klaas was born in Shepherd, MT on October 12, 1923 to Oner and Cornelia (Straatsma) Andriesen. Klaas joined the Army the day after he graduated from Billings High School and served during WWII in the South Pacific. After military service, Klaas met Jerita in Bozeman and they were married in Bozeman on August 19, 1947. Klaas and Jerita farmed in the Three Forks area for a time, until
Klaas was employed by Van Dyken Drilling. Klaas Andriesen bought the business in 1976 and ran it with his son-in-law, Bernie Westra. He and Jerita purchased the Drilling Co. with Bernie and Myra Westra. Klaas died February 13, 2012 (Findagrave.com 2004) and is buried in Churchill Cemetery in Churchill, MT.
The shop on this lot was torn down in 1989. In 1990, according to property information on the Montana Cadastral website, the residential duplex was built in its place.
Charles R. and Lois M. Osborne purchased the property July 1, 2003 and are the current owners as of 2019.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE This site has been evaluated for eligibility against the NRHP Criteria. The duplex recorded was built in 1990 and has not reached the
fifty-year threshold for consideration as a historic property. No additional historic structures or features were observed within the site boundaries. The site lacks associations that would satisfy Criterion Consideration G for properties that have achieved historic
significance within the past fifty years. Therefore, Metcalf recommends this site not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. In consideration of the number of historic, mid-century Minimal Traditional houses in the vicinity, Metcalf recommends this site be
considered a non-contributing element to any potential historic district identified in the 1941 Violett Addition.
