The single-story commercial garage faces west, with garage bays accessible from both east and west elevations. The building has a rectangular footprint with a concrete foundation. The roof is gable-front and covered in asphalt shingles; it has a side extension to the north and south and the southernmost garage bay is flat-roofed. A shed-roofed storage addition is on the north end of the east elevation. The primary façade faces west, with store-front entries. One vehicle entrance is located at the south end of the west elevation and multiple garage doors are located across the east elevation. The main entry is on the west elevation. The exterior surrounding the entry is clad in vertical particle board in the upper gable end over the main entry and the largest of the three garage bays. Brick veneer separates the entry door from the largest, central garage bay, and from the middle and southern-most garage bays. Drivet has been used as the exterior siding wrapping the west elevation’s northern corner and covering much of the west end of the north elevation. The flat-roofed garage at the south end of the building is constructed of concrete masonry blocks. This is the original 1956 garage. The west façade has two fixed-lite commercial windows set in the north portion. A canopy shades the main entrance to the business, which is offset to the north of center. The primary display window is large, with two asymmetrically divided fixed-lite panels set with transom lites above. The door is at the south end beside the window. A tall garage bay is set off-center below the gable peak, separated from the next bay by a narrow wall containing another doorway, no longer functioning as such. This opening has been infilled with a wood panel below three stacked fixed-lite windows above which there is an original transom. The middle bay is separated by a brick veneer section from the third garage bay contained in the concrete block, shed roof extension. The south elevation is built in close proximity to the neighboring business structure, leaving no space to observe any details on the exterior of the concrete block garage. The east elevation encloses the drive-throughs of all three of the garage bays. Against the northern end of the façade is a small, shed-roofed addition with two openings clad in vertical particle board, and used for storage purposes. The north elevation has a heavy header supporting the roof, and two large openings which have been infilled with wood panels in the east half. The west half is clad in drivet, and has two fixed-lite modern windows. The openings for the garages are original and the window openings appear unaltered. The garage bay doors are steel roller doors, likely original. Overall, the site is in good condition and retains some aspects of integrity. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 438 N 7TH AVE Site Number: 028 HISTORY OF PROPERTY Prior to construction of the building at this location, the property was originally purchased and owned by William Beall. It was platted as The Violett Addition by Lena E. Border, Harvey E. Murdock and Ina I. Murdock on May 12, 1941. Lena Border was born September 6, 1873 to Sam and Mary Bostwick near Springhill, MT. On August 12, 1883 Lena married Henry Border and they lived on a farm outside of Bozeman for ten years and then moved into Bozeman where they lived until Henry’s death in 1929. After the death of her husband, Lena lived with her daughter, Dr. Leila Fishleigh, in Portland OR. Mrs. Border was a member of the Bozeman Rebekah Lodge (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 1941). Lena died on August of 1941 and is buried next to Henry in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Find A Grave 2004). Harvey Murdock was born in Ohio, and Ina (Brown) Murdock was born in South Dakota. The couple married in 1907 and came to Montana in 1914. Harvey taught at Montana State College (MSC) which became Montana State University from 1914 until he retired in 1943. Harvey died in July of 1956 (The Billings Gazette 7/18/1956) and Ina died in 1972. They are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Find A Grave 2004). In 1955, Norine Motors, Inc. sold Lots 17 & 18 in Block 3 of the Violett Addition to Standard Oil Company (Gallatin County Deed 117/527). The following year, William V. Davis opened “Bills Standard Service” on the property. The property was used as a service station throughout its history; it was called Seventh Avenue Standard Service from 1962 through 1975 (R.L. Polk & Co). From 1977 to 1982 it was called Aspen Standard and from 1983 to 1991 it was called, Mr. T’s Exxon or Mister T’s Exxon. From 1992 to 2019 the business was called Speedy Lube (R.L. Polk & Co.). Table 1. Chain of Title, 438 N 7th Ave, Bozeman, Montana.
