The property at 428 N. 7th Avenue consists of a single historical/architectural feature: a commercial structure built as a showroom for
the monument construction firm operating from an adjacent residence. The brick building is wood-frame with a rectangular foot-print.
The hipped roof of the front two-thirds of the building is covered with asphalt shingles. A flat-roofed addition at the rear is roofed in a
material which could not be seen. The foundation is concrete. A long brick structure, the primary façade, faces west, and in it the
primary entrance is centered and at grade. On the west façade the entry door is in a shallow recess flanked by display windows, which
wrap around the west end of the north and south elevations. The windows appear original, and are suitable for the intended display
purpose. On the south façade the large display windows are fixed picture windows, set low, and two additions are visible, the first
marked by a slight change in the brick coursing. Glass block side-lites flank the doorway, which marks the beginning of the western-
most addition. Two large twelve-lite windows are set in this section as well. The rear portion of the building is brick and flat-roofed,
and is most likely an original garage which has been annexed to the expanding footprint of the building. This part is slightly taller than
the rest of the structure. The east elevation contains a single garage bay which appears to contain the original garage door and an
original six-lite window to the north. On the north elevation, there is a six-lite window, and two large display windows continue
around the west façade.
The building was built in 1949 to be used as a showroom for a monument construction operation, and was expanded to increase space
for those operations. At some time in the subsequent decade the building was made longer, and at this time or at a later date the
formerly detached garage at the rear of the property was joined to the main structure. The yard surrounding the building is covered in
concrete to allow greater display opportunities. Painted portions of the building are weathered and in need of maintenance. The
property is in good condition overall.

History of Property
Property Name: 428 N 7TH AVE Site Number: 027
HISTORY OF PROPERTY
Prior to construction of the building at 428 N 7th Ave. this property was originally purchased and owned by William Beall. It was later
platted as The Violett Addition by Lena E. Border, Harvey E. Murdock, and Ina I. Murdock on May 12, 1941.
Lena Border was born on September 6, 1873 to Sam and Mary Bostwick, near Springhill, MT. On August 12, 1883, Lena married
Henry Border and they lived on a farm outside of Bozeman for ten years, after which they moved into Bozeman where they lived until
Henry’s death in 1929. Lena Border was a member of the Bozeman Rebekah Lodge (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 1941). After the death
of her husband, Lena lived with her daughter, Dr. Leila Fishleigh, in Portland OR. Lena died in August 1941 and is buried next to
Henry in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). Harvey Murdock was born in Ohio, and Ina (Brown)
Murdock was born in South Dakota. The couple married in 1907 and came to Montana in 1914. Harvey taught at Montana State
College (MSC) - which later became Montana State University in 1965 - from 1914 until he retired in 1943. Harvey died in July 1956
and Ina died in 1972 (The Billings Gazette 18 July 1956). They are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT
(Findagrave.com 2004).
This commercial structure was built in approximately 1950 to be used as the Bozeman Granite Works showroom. Fred Willson, a
noted local architect, designed the building in 1948 at the request of Roy and Verna Ayres, the original owners. The architectural
drawings of the building are in Montana State University (MSU) Special Collections and Archives, at the MSU Library.
In the 1950s, an additional workspace was built onto the rear of the building for monument construction. The original building was
built as a showroom; originally all the monument construction occurred at a shop in Livingston, MT. After the addition was
constructed, monument construction was moved to Bozeman, MT (Tom Olson, personal communication 2019).
Roy Ayres was born in Butler, MO to Daniel and Mollie Ayres on April 9, 1899. He attended the University of Montana in Missoula,
MT. He served in the Navy during WWII and was a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies, and the
Baghdad Shrine Temple. Roy and Verna (née Mecum) were married on July 30, 1924 in Douglas, Wyoming (The Billings Gazette 16
Jan 1986). Roy and Verna moved to Bozeman in 1926 and started Bozeman Granite Works. Roy and Verna owned and operated
Bozeman Granite Works until 1970. Roy and Verna are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com
2004).
Roy and Verna Ayres owned Bozeman Granite Works in 1950 when the building was built. In 1970, they sold the building and the
business to Jacob Hauf, Jr.
Jacob “Jake” Hauf was born on January 13, 1919 to Jacob and Katerine (Bauer) Hauf in Nisland, South Dakota. After moving to
Bozeman, Jake purchased Bozeman Granite Works. He was good at this work and enjoyed it, until he and his wife moved to San
Antonio, Texas in 1977. Jake died on March 9, 2005 and is buried in Sheridan, WY (Findagrave, 2004; Missoulian 22 March 2005).
Barbara Judith (Edwards) Hauf was born on November 27, 1926 to Lee Nichols Edwards and Blanche Rosamond (Burdan) Edwards
in Forsyth, MT. She met Jacob “Jake” Hauf when he worked as an orderly at the Neuropsychiatric Veterans Hospital in Sheridan,
Wyoming. Barbara “Judy” and Jake were married on June 5, 1946, and moved to his farm outside of Ranchester, Wyoming. Judy and
Jake moved to Bozeman in approximately 1960 for Barbara to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 1961 and a master's
degree in nursing in 1962 at MSC (later known as Montana State University). From 1962 through 1977 Barbara was a member of the
MSU College of Nursing faculty in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. Barbara died on July 7, 2017 and is buried in
Sheridan, WY (Missoulian 5 July 2017).
Jacob and Barbara Hauf sold the building and the business to Gerhmann and Betty Jean Reinhard on October 1, 1974. Gerhmann
“Gary” Reinhard was born on May 23, 1939 in Callaway, NE to John and Maxine Reinhard. He finished high school in Potter, NE
while living and assisting the Herboldsheimer family, who were distant relatives, with farm duties. Gary met his future wife, Betty
Jean Madden during high school in Potter, NE. Gary and Betty Jean were married on November 8, 1959. Gary was drafted into, and
served in, the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963 (Legacy.com 2019). Gary, Betty Jean, and their young family moved to Bozeman in 1972
where Gary worked in financial security. Gary Reinhard died on June 2, 2010 in Bozeman, MT. Betty Jean Reinhard was born on
August 13, 1940 to Howard James and Nora Emma Madden of Potter, NE. Betty Jean died on July 21, 2016 in Bozeman, MT
(Dokkennelson.com 2003-2019).

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The property has not been previously surveyed. It is in good condition overall, and Metcalf finds that it retains sufficient integrity to
convey historic character.
Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or
State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been
evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site
is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district
composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its association with the Postwar
Expansion Phase of Bozeman’s development (RTI 2008). It is representative of the earliest expressions of what is now considered
Minimal Traditional housing, as it was seen throughout central Bozeman. Metcalf recommends further research be conducted
regarding Bozeman’s 1941 Violett Addition in order to evaluate district potential.

INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association)
The site is in good condition, overall. Aspects of integrity, setting, workmanship, feeling and association are undiminished. Deferred
maintenance is visible in failing paint and unaddressed dry rot around the display windows, and in cracked mortar joints in the east,
flat-roofed section, affecting the integrity of materials. The addition to the original west end and the subsequent annexation of a
formerly detached garage, affect the integrity of design. However, Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic
character.
