ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
Architectural Style: Other (specify) If Other, specify: Vernacular Bungalow
Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Bozeman Trophy
Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown
Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: N/A

The site consists of two historical architectural features: a brick building used for commercial purposes, but was originally a single-
family residence, and a concrete block garage. Feature 1 is a wood-framed, single-story building constructed in 1949 as a residence.
Records indicate the home was also used as a business office for the owner. Built in a Vernacular style with a Bungalow form, the
structure is clad in brick, with cut stone details at the corners, around the front entry, and on the chimney. The building has a
rectangular footprint with an asphalt shingled, hipped roof. The primary façade faces west, and the above-grade entry is centered
between two large picture windows. These windows appear to be replacements of original windows, and it is presumed the openings
were enlarged. Two-lite sliding basement windows are centered below the picture windows, in the brick-faced foundation. The cheek
walls of the entry staircase are made of cut stone. The surround of the front door and the corners of the west-facing façade are detailed
with cut stone.
The north elevation contains a secondary above-grade entry positioned between two windows to the west and one window to the east.
The window closest to the west end of the elevation is a picture window with 4-lite sidelites. A smaller window is located mid-way on
the elevation. The final window on the main floor is a one-over-one light sash window. Basement windows are set in the brick-faced
foundation below. The south elevation has a window near the rear corner, and a large picture window flanked with 4-lite sidelites.
Dominating this elevation is a chimney faced with a body of cut stone built on a brick base and capped with a brick top section.
With the exception of the picture windows on the west facade, all windows appear original. The use of cut stone embellishments to the
property is a personal nod to the occupation and profession of the original inhabitant of the house, who owned and operated Bozeman
Granite Works.
Feature 2 is a two-stall, gable-roofed, single-story concrete-block garage built in 1961. It has a rectangular footprint and concrete slab
foundation. The roof has asphalt shingles, and the structure has two garage openings on the east elevation, allowing access to the alley
behind the property. On the north elevation is a paneled standard door with an inset window. A single fixed-lite window is located at
near center. Two garage bays are centered in the east gable end. All windows appear original to the date of construction, however, the
garage doors have been replaced with vertical wood panels, which are not operational.
The site is in excellent condition overall.

History of Property

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
Prior to construction of the house at 426 N 7th Ave, the property was originally purchased and owned by William Beall (Phillips
2016). It was platted as The Violett Addition by Lena E. Border, Harvey E. Murdock, and Ina I. Murdock on May 12, 1941 (Table 1).
Lena Border was born September 6, 1873 to Sam and Mary Bostwick near Springhill, MT. On August 12, 1883, Lena married Henry
Border and they lived on a farm outside of Bozeman for ten years, after which they moved into Bozeman where they lived until
Henry’s death in 1929. Lena Border was a member of the Bozeman Rebekah Lodge (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 1941). After the death
of her husband, Lena lived with her daughter, Dr. Leila Fishleigh, in Portland OR. Lena died in August 1941 and was buried next to
Henry in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004).
Harvey Murdock was born in Ohio, and Ina (Brown) Murdock was born in South Dakota. The couple was married in 1907 and came
to Montana in 1914. Harvey taught at Montana State College (MSC) - which later became Montana State University in 1965 - from
1914 until he retired in 1943. Harvey died in July 1956 (The Billings Gazette, 18 July 1956) and Ina died in 1972. They were buried
together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004).
The first owners and occupants of a building on this site were Roy and Verna Ayres. Building permits from April 11, 1950, show Roy
R. Ayres built a shop and workroom on this property, but the two also resided here. Roy had been born in Butler, MO to Daniel and
Mollie Ayres on April 9, 1899. He attended the University of Montana in Missoula, MT. He served in the Navy during WWII and was
a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Baghdad Shrine Temple. Roy and Verna (née
Mecum) were married on July 30, 1924 in Douglas, Wyoming (The Billings Gazette 16 Jan 1986). They moved to Bozeman in 1926
and started Bozeman Granite Works. When they purchased this property, Roy and Verna continued to operate the business here until it
closed in 1970. Roy died on January 14, 1986. Verna died on May 19, 1995. Roy and Verna are buried together in Sunset Hills
Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004).
On April 2, 1986, Verna Ayres sold the property to Dennis and Lowell W. Springer. They transformed the residence into a
commercial space to house their firm, Bozeman Trophy. The space is still owned by the Springers and is still operating as Bozeman
Trophy as of 2019.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The property has not been previously surveyed. It is in excellent condition overall, and Metcalf finds that it retains sufficient integrity
to convey historic character.
Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or
State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been
evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site
is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district
composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its association with the Postwar
Expansion Phase of Bozeman’s development (RTI 2008). It is representative of the earliest expressions of what is now considered
Minimal Traditional housing, as it was seen throughout central Bozeman. Metcalf recommends further research be conducted
regarding Bozeman’s 1941 Violett Addition in order to evaluate district potential.

Integrity

INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association)
This site is in excellent condition but has been converted from its original use as a residence and home office for the owner’s business,
and functions exclusively as a commercial property. The windows on the primary (west) elevation have been replaced and the original
openings altered to allow for slightly larger picture windows to be installed. All other windows appear original. Integrity of materials
and design has been affected to some extent by the window alteration. The garage is unchanged except for the bays which have been
infilled with panels that are not operational. The integrity of feeling, workmanship, setting, and association remain unaffected.
