Mihelich Appointing Him as the Bozeman City Manager MEETING DATE: April 20, 2020 AGENDA ITEM TYPE: Action
RECOMMENDATION: Authorize the Mayor to sign the employment agreement with Jeff
Mihelich.
RECOMMENDED MOTION: I move to authorize the Mayor to sign the employment agreement with Jeff Mihelich.
BACKGROUND: The City Commission recently concluded a thorough and complete search for a City Manager. I anticipate that with your previous agenda item you will vote to select Jeff Mihelich as City Manager. As such, I requested the City Attorney to draft an employment agreement modeled on the employment agreement you have used with the two previous city
managers.
The Employment Agreement contains the following provisions, among others:
• The agreement is effective upon execution by the Mayor. However, the start date for Mr.
Mihelich is Tuesday, May 26, 2020. Mr. Mihelich will be subject to a 12-month
probationary period.
• The base pay for the first 12 months of employment is $183,000 per year.
• A $10,000 increase in salary will be provided effective May 26, 2021.
• A cost of living increase will be provided in subsequent years beginning January 1, 2022.
• The City will provide health insurance in the same manner as with all other full time
employees.
• The City will provide $500 per month in transportation expenses.
• Mr. Mihelich must reside within city limits. The City will provide a housing allowance of
$2,000 per month.
• An additional contribution to retirement is provided in Section VI.4.
• The City will provide administrative leave days and moving expenses.
CPS-HR has begun a thorough background check. At the time of publishing this memorandum that financial and criminal portions of the background check have been completed. Currently,

CPS-HR is conducting the remaining reference checks. I will update the Commission on the status
of the reference checks prior to you taking action on this item. The reference checks must be
completed prior to the Commission taking action on this item. FISCAL EFFECTS: The Commission has previously budgeted for the salary for the City
Manager. Any additional funds necessary will be covered by vacancy savings in the General
Fund.
