Hello Mary,
Thanks for sharing your concerns about tree removals. The trees at Tracy and Mendenhall are part
of a small removal contract managed by the Forestry Division. We’ve chosen about 20 trees
throughout the city that have shown signs of decline – most are also conflicting with intersections
and have a history of storm damage. Boulevard trees are indeed public property and we assess trees
year-round for safety concerns. We do notify adjacent property owners and provide options for
replacement trees when possible. The Forestry Division is not involved with tree maintenance on
private property, only boulevards and city properties.
Please contact me with any additional questions or concerns,

On March 26, the trees on the boulevard on Tracy and Mendehall, near the newly remove buildings on that
corner were cut down. I am sad to see this. I am wondering if this was sanctioned by the City of Bozeman,
and why? If this was not done by direct order by the City, then were proper processes followed before this
was allowed? Are there laws concerning who can cut trees on the city boulevards? I was under the
impression that boulevard trees are city assets, not owned by individuals or corporations who occupy the
property. So, what is the process by which a tree is allowed to be removed? Is there any community
notification? I am worried about losing our urban forest. Before the big old pines at the Medical Arts center
are chopped, I would like to express my strong opposition.
Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this issue, which may seem trivial during the serious
pandemic. Sincerely, Mary Bateson
