Good Afternoon,
I trust you are staying safe. Interesting times.
You are no doubt aware of the sustainable development code (SDC). If not, the City's staff most likely is. I was
not, but see that MSU is a contributor to the project. I attach a recent article in a publication I receive on land use,
planning and the SDC and how to maximize its use. For that reason I send on. As I've only stumbled upon it, I take
no position on its substance, but will review with interest.
One section that caught my eye was limiting off property shading of solar energy systems, or the potential for such
systems. As I walk in the sections of town where large buildings have been allowed -- eg black and olive, Loft 1,
etc. -- I feel for the first time in this town the loss of sun, sky and openness. In my neighborhood, a three story, 3
unit condo is going up on a lot that once was home to a single family residence. The homes (and entire lots) to the
north of this monstrosity will most assuredly feel the diminished sunshine they once took for granted, as the condo
covers the entire lot (east to west). I wouldn't want to own the homes to the north of this project.
While I thank you for your service, I must state, again, that the actions taken by a majority of the commission are
decimating the character of my neighborhood and those near the downtown core. As evidenced by the public
comment at the meeting a few weeks ago, many people don't believe there is anyone listening. Many others believe
the commission views the residents as simply an ATM machine. The City Commission may wish to act, like the
school districts, in pulling the park district tax increase from the ballot this May. That might show some empathy to
people already struggling to pay the property taxes in this town.
