Architectural Description

ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Other (specify) If Other, specify: Mid century modern Property Type: Commercial Specific Property Type: Sturdy Stitching and Upholstery Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A
This property consists of one architectural feature: a single story concrete block commercial building built in 1976. It exhibits characteristics of Mid-Century Modern style expressed in commercial form. It is simple in form, with few details of ornamentation. It has a rectangular plan shape with a poured-concrete foundation. The roof is side-gabled and covered by asphalt shingles. At the east end of the building is an attached single stall garage, taller than the main volume of the building. The primary façade is on the north, facing W. Beall Street. There are two at-grade entries and three display windows. Each window has side-by-side fixed lites, and one window has sliding lites. The windows appear original, but may have been replaced with original openings. No fenestration is present on the east gable end. The west end has one metal framed window. The garage door is on the east end of the north façade, and has a concrete surround with a stylized grooved motif. The opening is sized to allow for over-sized vehicles such as delivery trucks. Parking space is provided along the front of the building, and access is from W. Beall Street. The property is in excellent condition, and the surrounding spaces well maintained. The site was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, it was erroneously documented using the address of the property immediately to the east, 522 W. Beall St. It was considered an “intrusive element” within a potential historic district. Metcalf finds that the property has nearly reached the fifty-year threshold for consideration as a historic property and, in consideration of very few changes made to the structure over time, finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.

History of Property
Property Name: 608 W BEALL ST Site Number: 048
HISTORY OF PROPERTY This property originally consisted of an area that fronted on both Lamme Street and Beall Street. A residence was built on the property facing Lamme Street in 1891-1892, the address being 521 W. Lamme Street. In 1972, a commercial structure was built on the north side of the lot facing Beall Street, with the address of 522 Beall Street. In 1973 this property was subdivided. The north 42 feet of Lots 9 and 10 and the west 56 feet of lots 24 and 28 of Block E of Tracy’s 3rd Addition were split away from the original property
boundaries. The owners of the property at the time of the subdivision were the Fjelds. he property at 608 W. Beall Street was constructed in 1976, and has not yet reached the fifty year threshold for consideration as a historic property. Built for commercial occupation, it is now the address for the Sturdy Stitching Upholstery business founded in 1992 by Tina Ortman. Research of the property records indicate no alteration or major remodeling has been done to the building.

Statement of Significance
Property Name: 608 W BEALL ST Site Number: 048
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The property is in excellent condition. The site was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects, mis-identified as 522 W. Beall St. which is the address born by the adjacent property to the east. This site was considered an “intrusive element” within a
potential historic district when first recorded, as it had only been built eight years prior to the survey. Metcalf finds that the property has nearly reached the fifty-year threshold for consideration as a historic property. It has experienced no major alterations over this time and Metcalf finds that it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.
This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria. Cursory research has found no significant associations with events that have made contribution to the broad patterns of our history under Criterion A. The site lacks direct association with persons of historical
significance under Criterion B. Under Criterion C, the site does not represent significant characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction. Under Criterion D, the site is not likely to yield information that would contribute significantly to our understanding of the past. Metcalf recommends this site not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
