This site is the Kenyon Noble Lumber Company, consisting of five commercial warehouse buildings within a fenced-in lumber yard encompassing 9.38 acres. Street addresses for these warehouse buildings are given as 1104 N Rouse Ave, 511 E Tamarack St, and 905 N Wallace Ave. Of the five buildings, four were visible from the public ROW and only two are fifty years in age.
Feature 1 is a metal-clad warehouse building at 1104 N Rouse Ave, built in 1958. It is a two-story building, with a gable-front roof and a shed-roofed extension along the north elevation. The feature has a rectangular plan shape with a concrete foundation. The exterior is clad in standing-seam steel siding. The primary entrance is located on the west gable end, with a standard glass door accessed by a concrete stoop. Original windows and openings appear to be intact, with a mixture of metal casement windows and sliding windows observed. An additional entrance to the building was visible from the ROW and consists of a large vehicle bay door. This feature is in good condition.
Feature 2 is an arched Quonset-style storage building built in 1959. It is a galvanized steel structure with a rectangular plan set on a concrete foundation. The building is roughly 100 feet long (north-south) and 55 feet wide (east-west). The primary entrance is on the south façade and consists of a standard door west of center. Centered on the façade is a large sectional garage door, open at the time of inventory. The feature is in good condition, with some minor damage sustained over the years, as indicated by dents in the exterior steel siding.
In addition to the two historic features, there are three modern buildings on site. To the northwest of Feature 2 is a large wood-framed, metal clad warehouse building. It has a gable-front roof with two large vehicle bay doors on the south façade. The building is in excellent condition but was built in 1984 and is not considered a historic structure. Further north, there is a smaller wood-framed, metal clad warehouse building. It, too, has a gable roof. It was not able to be seen clearly from the public ROW but according to Montana Cadastral records, it was built in 1998 and is not considered a historic structure. A third building, a large two-story concrete edifice, is located at the southeast corner of the site. It was built in 1976 and bears characteristics of the post-modern style, with vertically-grooved concrete panels as the exterior facing. The entry is on the east elevation and very few window openings are present. The building is in good condition but is not considered a historic structure at this time.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
This site is property of the Kenyon Noble Lumber yard, a local business with a supply center on Oak Street. The Company was
founded by Squire C. Kenyon who purchased the Prey Lumber Company in Salesville and moved the operation to Bozeman in 1889. The Company was reborn as the S.C. Kenyon Lumber Dealer. Originally, Kenyon’s operation was located on Main Street, and sold
coal as well as lumber milled at the mouth of Middle Creek Canyon. In 1906, the Company was re-incorporated with two additional owners: Kenyon’s son Carlisle Kenyon and Thomas Noble (Phillips 2016).
Thomas Noble was a logger. He and his wife Anna had come to Bozeman in 1890, where he found work with the Prey Lumber
Company before rising to role of partner in Kenyon’s new enterprise (Montana Historical Society n.d.).
The company is currently known as Kenyon Noble Lumber & Hardware, specializing in hardware, construction materials, concrete and trusses. They have property throughout the region with operations in Bozeman, Belgrade, and Livingston, Montana.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Metcalf has made a preliminary field assessment regarding the potential eligibility of this site against the NRHP Criteria. The site is in good condition and retains certain aspects of integrity. Cursory research reveals historic associations with a long-standing Bozeman business and some of the City’s prominent early businessman engaged in the lumber industry—S.C. and Carlyle Kenyon and Thomas Noble. However, this property postdates the involvement of these three individuals with the company and has no direct association with the significance of their business in the early development of Bozeman. Metcalf, therefore, finds the site is not eligible under Criterion A or B. It does not represent significant characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction, nor does it represent the work of a master under Criterion C. Furthermore, it is unlikely an archaeological investigation of this site would yield information important to our understanding of area history under Criterion D. Metcalf recommends this site not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.

Some damage to the exterior materials of Feature 2 was noted as having a minor affect on integrity of materials. Introduction of new buildings set apart from the historic features is in keeping with the property’s type as a commercial lumber yard. Overall, the site
retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character.
