The historical feature is a concrete and brick frame, single-story building. It has been remodeled extensively, with contemporary aesthetic but no stylistic embellishment indicating its mid-century construction. It has a rectangular plan with a concrete foundation. The roof is flat with a deep projecting cornice on all but the west elevation. The exterior walls are clad in drivet, and the west elevation is painted brick. The primary façade, as indicated by the main entry, is on a canted corner facing northeast and consists of a metal-framed double door. A concrete pathway leads up the front entry and runs along the north and west elevations, and a small asphalt parking lot sits to the north of the building for customer parking. A back entry is located on the south elevation and faces another parking area for the other commercial buildings in the surrounding area. The windows on the north and west façades are paired two over two lite windows typical of mid century, and are likely historic. The doors, however, are modern. The site is well maintained and features a small grass lawn to the west of the building and deciduous trees at its southwest corner. Deciduous bushes and grass also border the edges of the asphalt parking lot. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 702 W MAIN ST Site Number: 082 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The commercial building was erected in 1966 and renovated in 2000. A cursory search for any information pertaining to the current or past owners provided some historical context for this site. Prior to housing Zero Gravity, it was the site of Bozeman Printing, owned and operated by Cliff and Brad Renner. The print shop was in business for over thirty years (Kendall 2017). The property is in good condition and has experienced several modifications that have altered its original mid-century style. The modifications affect the site’s ability to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 5 Statement of Significance Property Name: 702 W MAIN ST Site Number: 082 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE Metcalf has made a preliminary field assessment regarding the potential eligibility of this site. It is found to lack integrity sufficient to convey historic character in reference to associations with events that have made significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history under Criterion A, historically significant persons under Criterion B, characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction under Criterion C, and it is unlikely to yield important information in reference to research questions under Criterion D. Metcalf recommends this site not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP on the basis of lack of integrity. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Integrity Property Name: 702 W MAIN ST Site Number: 082 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in good condition, overall. The remodeling of the building’s exterior in 2000, chiefly the application of modern synthetic siding, detracts from its historic character affecting integrity of materials, design feeling and workmanship. Metcalf finds the property does not retain sufficient integrity to convey its historic character.
