The building is a single-story concrete structure with no particular style. It has a rectangular plan shape with a concrete foundation. The roof is flat and has a steel-paneled red and white colored cornice. The exterior walls are concrete. To the north and south of the building are canopy-covered gas pumps. The main entry is on the south façade, facing Main Street. An additional entrance is located on the north elevation. Both entrances are on the west end of the building and consist of commercial glass doors flanked by a bank of fixed commercial metal windows. A bank of identical windows spans the west elevation. The east elevation contains a rear employee entrance and two exterior restroom entrances. Overall, the site is in good condition; however, it has not yet reached the fifty year threshold for consideration as a historic property. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 621 W MAIN ST Site Number: 080 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The Continental Oil Company began in Ogden, Utah in 1875. As the company grew, it was taken over by Standard Oil in 1885. At the time, Standard Oil was the number one marketer of petroleum products in the Rocky Mountain West. The company not only produced oil and gas, but opened service stations throughout the west. The first filling station was built in 1909 and, by the 1930s, the company had expanded to having more than 1,000 station locations across the west. The name “Conoco” came in 1929 through the merger of Marland Oil and Continental Oil and Transportation Co. (Jones 2003). Eventually, the company opened a franchise program. The Conoco Station at 621 W Main Street in Bozeman, Montana was built in 1990 and has not yet reached the fifty year threshold for consideration as a historic property. This site is not yet fifty years old and has not achieved significance that would satisfy Criterion Consideration G for such properties to be considered eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. The site is considered not eligible at this time, but should be reevaluated once it has reached the fifty year threshold for consideration. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Integrity Property Name: 621 W MAIN ST Site Number: 080 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) This site is in good condition. Some window openings appear to have been altered on the south façade, affecting integrity of materials to some extent. However, sufficient integrity remains to convey the site’s original character, though not yet historic.
