Architectural Description
Property Name: 404 N 7TH AVE Site Number: Error! Reference source not found. ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Other (specify) If Other, specify: Contemporary Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Restaurant Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This property consists of one architectural feature: a commercial fast food business built in 1981. The building has not yet reached the fifty year threshold for historic significance. It is a single-story, wood-frame structure with a rectangular footprint and a concrete foundation. The roof is flat. The building is contemporary in its finishes, and features nested arches and a prominent exaggerated keystone on the west or 7th Avenue façade. There is a slight nod to the Art Deco style in the overall presentation of the building. The exterior is clad in synthetic stucco or EIFS. The windows on the west, north, and south façades are commercial glass windows, tall and narrow with fixed transom lites. The entry door to this Papa John’s restaurant is set at the west end of the north façade. A faux curved- awning wraps around the west façade corners, and extends over the entry door. On the north façade a drive-through service bay bumps out from the midway point of the building, and contains a sliding glass window with fixed-lite casements. The main façade, west-facing, features the trademark arch with its exaggerated keystone above the nested arches that contain a panel with the restaurant’s name over the street-side windows. The south façade has two tall, thin commercial glass windows with metal frames, and fixed-lite transoms are framed together. The faux-awning wraps around the west façade corner to extend past the windows on the south façade. The property is in excellent condition and has well-tended landscaping. Property records note the original business to occupy the building was a Taco Bell franchise which opened in 1981. Remodeling of the building was documented in 2001, when the business became a Papa John’s Pizza restaurant. The exterior was changed cosmetically to reflect the change in commercial affiliation and franchise requirements. The site is in excellent condition overall, but aesthetic changes have affected integrity.

History of Property
Property Name: 404 N 7TH AVE Site Number: 023
HISTORY OF PROPERTY The property at 404 N. 7th Avenue in Bozeman, Montana was constructed in 1981 and has not yet reached the fifty year threshold for
consideration as a historic property. It first opened as a Taco Bell—a fast-food Mexican restaurant. Taco Bell was founded in 1962 by a California businessman and restaurateur Glen Bell, who began franchising the brand in 1964. By 1978, 868 Taco Bell restaurants
were in operation and Glen Bell sold all of them to PepsiCo Inc. In 1980, the new owner developed a fresh design for the chain’s buildings, featuring a simpler exterior appearance with a modified and homogenized adobe-like Spanish architectural inspiration. The original design of the property at 404 N. 7th Avenue belongs to this second style of the Taco Bell brand buildings. Remodeling of the building was documented in 2001, when the business became a Papa John’s Pizza restaurant. The exterior was changed cosmetically
to reflect the change in commercial affiliation and franchise requirements. It no longer reflects its original association with the Taco Bell franchise.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Metcalf Archaeological Consultants has made a preliminary field assessment regarding the potential eligibility of the site. This site is not yet fifty years old and has not achieved significance that would satisfy Criterion Consideration G for such properties to be considered eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Furthermore, the site was remodeled in 2001, affecting integrity of materials, design, workmanship, feeling, and association such that it no longer conveys its original character. The site is considered not eligible at this time, but should be reevaluated once it has reached the fifty year threshold for consideration.
