Good evening, commissioners. I am Don Murdock, a Bozeman native, who
in the mid 40s to early 50s watched movies at the three movietheaters. At that time, Main Street businesses and their "storefronts" were vastly different than now exist in 2020 (seven decadeslater). As I've traveled throughout Montana in recent years, manyoriginal theaters have been renovated and become a focal point in thetown's history (Anaconda, Philipsburg, Deer Lodge, Butte,...). Thecurrent emphasis in 'Downtown Bozeman' seems to be on in-fill (tallbuildings, multi-use, etc) many of which came from "repurposing"existing older buildings or tear down/build new. The same thing hashappened with many of the buildings on both Babcock and Mendenhall. Iam sure there are many "technical" issues that the planning departmentconsidered--both pro and con to the proposal. A 12 sq ft sign, in thisinstance, seems to be quite small compared to the size of the building. I believe that when a building is scheduled for renovation, adjacentowners are notified for their comment. If that is true and no adversecomments were received, I think those owners are comfortable with theproposed sign and location. In summary, I believe the Commissionshould allow the proposed sign to be installed and thus restore the1930s view looking east or west from one end or the other on Main Streetwhen the original sign was up. Have a successful 2020! Thank you forallowing my input. Don H. Murdock
