The Bozeman City Commission wishes to cxpress its concurrence with the Bozeman
Municipal Watershed project to be undertaken by the United States Forest Service. The
maintenance of a high quality, long term domestic water supply for the residents of
Bozeman has been a matter of great concern to the Commission in the face of wildfire
risk in the municipal watershed. The purposes of this project, to begin reducing the
potential severity and extent of future wildland fires in the watershed and to begin
creating vegetative and fuel conditions that would reduce the risk of excess sediment and
ash reaching the municipal water treatment plant in the event of a wildfire, address these
concerns directly. Other stated purposes, providing for firefighter and public safety in the
drainages, and reducing the potential fire spread to adjacent private lands in the wildland,
urban interface are also matters of great concern to us.
We understand that the Forest Service will continue to work with the Bozeman City
Commission and staff to coordinate the analysis and implementation of this important
project and that the decisions of the Forest Service and City will remain separate. Land
management decisions on Fcderallands within the watershed are made solely by the
Forest Servicc. Decisions on City lands within the watershed and decisions about City
water treatment and storage facilities remain outside the scope of any Forest Service
decision.
Again, please regard this letter as our stated concurrence with the project.
Sincerely,
~ {( ?---/
