RE: City Manager Search
Prior to moving to Gallatin County, I served as mayor and city commissioner in Sturgis, MI, a city of 12,000
people with close to 30,000 in the zip code shared with 4 townships (the four corners of which meet at the
City) and county. The City Manager, Mike Hughes, is, hands down, the best city manager in the state of
Michigan. He is not flashy, but a steady hand who is adept at building inter-governmental relationships.
Mike guided the city through a near decade long recession, and has asserted a tremendous sense of place.
He has particular skills in economic development and small business incubation. While Sturgis' problems
have been far different from Bozeman's, Mike would thrive in a high growth, fast paced environment.
I can't recommend him enough.
