HomeMy WebLinkAboutRecreation_December_2019Recreation Division Update 12/6/2019 • December Program Updates o Preschool (ages 2-5yr)  The December session of our Story Mill Sprouts preschool program is called Yuletide Youngsters and focuses on holidays! Exploring Story Mill Park in the snow has been an exciting addition to this month’s program.  Drop In and Play continues at the Story Mill Community Center gym on Friday mornings from 9am-11am and participation has picked up.  Our imagination playground blocks are here and Recreation Division staff are finding every opportunity they can to use them! The kids love the blocks and we love watching their imaginations go wild as they build together. o Letters From Santa  Recreation Division staff have started helping Santa write letters this month. Parents are invited to call our main office now through December 13th and leave information about their child to help personalize the letters. This is a fun free program that has remained popular through the years. o Youth Open Gym-Basketball  We will be opening the SMCC gymnasium on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons for children and their guardians to come in and play basketball. 3:30pm-5:00pm on Tuesday and Thursdays and 2:30pm-4:30pm on Friday’s. While the gym floor is not ideal for adult basketball due to the material impacting ball bounce, we feel the kids will enjoy practicing shooting and a little dribbling and simply having a big space to run around in during the cold winter months. This new program starts on December 17th. • Recreation Leaders-We are hiring! o We have extended two conditional part time Recreation Leader offers and hope to have those positions filled soon! o We are currently looking for ice skating instructors to plan and implement our lessons that will start in January (weather permitting). • We partner with the Friends of the Avalanche Center to offer a Beacon Park in Story Mill Park as soon as snow depths allow, which should be soon. The Friends provide the equipment and we provide the space and supervision. The park offers a great opportunity for people of all ages to hone their avalanche rescue skills. It will be equipped with three buried transceivers and users will be able to turn one or more on and use their personal transceivers and probes to locate the buried ones. • We, along with the Friends of the Avalanche Center will be offering our first Avalanche + Beacons presentation at the Story Mill Community Center on December 12th. Topics for this presentation include: Avalanche terrain recognition, the effect weather has on avalanche hazard, the development of mountain snowpack, decision making skills and basic search and rescue procedures. Registration is going on now. • Program planning for spring and summer 2020 has begun. The deadline for our next program guide is mid-January.
