South 5th Street reconstruction/ Resolution #4507
Hello,
I own a property on S. 5th Street in Bozeman. We have received from the city engineering division a
notice to reconstruct S. 5th St.
The proposal reflects the current property owners paying the vast majority of the cost.
This makes no sense.
- We already pay a street and tree tax.
- There is also a gas tax for the purposes of infrastructure.
- This is one of the oldest streets in town. Neglected and deferred maintenance over 100 years is not
the responsibility of the current owners
- Our property taxes are already very high, especially given the share of city services we receive.
These old neighborhoods still use old schools, old fire stations and generally old infrastructure. Property
owners in these neighborhood continue to be assessed for all the new schools, fire stations, trails and
parks and countless other infrastructure that have no relevance to our neighborhoods.
I currently have tenants renting this property. Should this proposal go forward as recommended, I will
have to raise the rent by $100/mo indefinitely. The city is always saying affordable housing is a major
priority. This does not reflect such a goal.
Yes the street needs repair, just not as the responsibility of the current property owners. 100 years of
neglect by the city's streets and budget decisions is unconscionable.
Count me as OVER TAXED and weary.
Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of the property owners and our concerns
