I was born and raised in Bozeman and have been working professionally in town since graduating from MSU
more than 10 years ago. And yet I have found it near impossible to purchase a home. I had a personal home
buying session with HRDC last week and while home-ownership is perhaps possible, it's still very
discouraging in that if done through one of their low-income/affordable housing options (sounds like the
trust-owned land mentioned in the recent Affordable Housing SymBozium event), it is in no way a financial
investment (no equity can be built and so a potentially better home is still out of reach if eventually sold)
and limits my ability to enjoy life for the next 30–40 years as more than half my monthly paycheck would go
toward the mortgage alone, never mind extra frivolous things like utilities, water, garbage/recycling,
HOA/COA, etc. These affordable housing areas also seem like a way separate the Haves and the Have-nots.
