I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed warming center to be located on
Westridge Drive. I understand the need for additional accommodations for those in need
during the colder months, but the location HRDC has proposed is not the best for all involved.
This is a R-1 single-family housing neighborhood. It is not zoned for business or multi-family
housing let alone one that allows 38 people to stay overnight. Logistically the location of the
proposed center (no longer a "house") does not make sense. Guests would have to be bussed
to and from the proposed center which is ineffecient and a waste of financial resources. A
more centrally located facility would be a better fit and a more convenient location. The
proposed location is not within walking distance of any services one may require and is
approximately 1 mile from the closest bus stop to get to services one may need. With no
restrictions guaranteeing the guests would stay the entire night, there is also concern for the
safety of guests and nearby residents. While the HRDC is saying this shelter is intended for
women and children there is nothing stopping them from changing that once it is approved
and potentially having 36 unvetted men staying overnight which adds to the concern for
safety.
I have a soft spot for helping those who are in need and volunteer and donate to this cause. I
understand the desire to find a permanent housing solution, but this house in an established
single family neighborhood is not the solution, not even temporarily. Please do not approve
the Special Use Permit that has been submitted by the HRDC.
