Subject:Proposed HRDC Homeless Shelter
Date:Tuesday, November 05, 2019 7:44:27 PM
There are appropriate places to place a warming shelter, such as the one across
the street from the old K-Mart building and there are inappropriate places,
such as the proposed shelter at 3025 Westridge Drive, a family neighborhood.
This area is zoned for families and now there is a school in the area. This is no
place for homeless individuals, no matter how needy, to be housed. No rules,
nothing to keep individuals with serious mental problems from leaving and
wandering around in the night. Sure not all individuals who are homeless have
mental problems….but more do than don’t to judge by those who are at the
Walmart corner asking for a handout. I question whether the home can
possibly hold 36 people. Our home in Figgins certainly could not. I am sorry for
the plight of the homeless. I admired the gentleman that provided the soup
kitchen near Walmart and I admire him for the home he remodeled. But what
happened? He gave up after so many of the residents didn’t follow the rules.
The same disaster could happen in our Figgins neighborhood. I urge the
commission to deny the special use permit being requested by HRDC. This is
not saying no to the homeless, but rather find a more suitable location.
