Subject:Proposed HRDC Homeless Shelter Located at 3025 Westridge Drive
Date:Sunday, November 03, 2019 8:41:53 PM
I’m asking that you decline the Special Use Permit for 3025 Westridge, requested by
the HRDC.
I have a lot of empathy for those needing a warming house. I don’t want to see
anyone left out in the cold. This matter is not just about the homeless this is also
about the safety of children too. That corner of Westridge & 3rd has a huge
amount of traffic from kids going to either Morningstar or Sacajawea. Even if the
HRDC says everyone will be gone by 7 am and not back until 7 pm, who would
monitor this? Once a permit is given, plans can change and there isn’t anything
we can do at that point. Starting next year, I will have a child that will cross that
path for the next three subsequent years. If you allow for the HRDC to use this
home as a warming shelter how can you guarantee the safety of those children
traveling by it? Not every child will be home by 4 pm. My older child used to come
home late from school due to extracurricular activities at Sacajawea. My younger
son passes by there frequently to visit friends in the Alder Creek neighborhood. I
feel like many have forgotten that we have another demographic that needs our
protection too, the children!! There are a lot of children in this neighborhood.
When I was a kid, my mother fled from an abusive spouse and we lived in a
women’s & children’s shelter until she was able to get an apartment. So trust me, I
get the importance of a shelter. I also know that it will bring a new set of issues to
the immediate area. Based on my experience and my children and the children of
this neighborhood that I grown to adore, I chose protecting the children first. I feel
this special permit for 3025 Westridge must be denied.
Thank you,
