Dear Ms. Rosenberg, Mr. Matsen and Mr. Mehl,
I have recently found out that there is a proposed warming hut for our neighborhood here in the Figgins
Subdivision. Although a warming hut in our community is a fine idea, this is an inappropriate location. As
a community creating a safe space for those in need is an important issue indeed, but this is not the proper
location. In particular, not only is this zoned R1 residential, we have two schools, Morningstar Elementary
& Sacajawea Middle School, within 1/4 mile of the HRDC property.
I am sure you’ve already heard many arguments coming forth and have done your research of the risks of
having such a hut. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for over 20 years and cannot imagine these risks coming
next door to me or any of my neighbors. Whether it’s the potential for increased crime, risk to our children,
parking & unwanted ‘ guests’, potential of violence, intoxication, weapons, etc., we do not want this here.
Do not allow this into our neighborhood. Answer this simple question, knowing these risks, would you want
a warming hut next door to you and your family? Or your children or your grandchildren? Then consider
this as you weigh in on this matter. Having two daughters, 17 & 20 years old, the potential threat coming
near my home is not something I take lightly as a parent.
In the recent past, this HRDC property was a fine use to help our troubled teens in the community. I can
also see it a possibility for women with children, but NOT for the general public. Bozeman has many issues
it’s facing with its growing population including an increased homeless population, but as part of the city
planning, you have to protect what already is in place: safe neighborhoods for families, college students &
elders. This is one of those places. There are many other locations here that can be used for a warming hut,
but don’t put it into a zoned R1 area. This is completely inappropriate.
