Burke - HRDC Warming Center SiteFrom:Matthew Burke To:Agenda Subject:Proposed HRDC Warming Center Date:Tuesday, October 29, 2019 9:46:05 AM I am contacting you to express my concern and opposition to the proposed HRDC Warming Center located 3025 Westridge Drive in the Figgens subdivision. I understand the need for such a facility, but I am very opposed to its location. It is 287 feet from Morning Star School and just a few blocks from Sacajawea Middle School. Its located in an R-1 neighborhood full of long term residents. I have owned a home in the area since 2009, and many residents have been there much longer than me. My six year old son and many other children walk to school every day and I am concerned for their safety if a population of transient residents is housed in this location. This will fundamentally change the character of our neighborhood. This shelter brings the risk of disturbances and incidents that would not otherwise occur in my neighborhood. Other HRDC shelters have experienced disturbances ranging from break-ins to arrest warrants being exercised by the police. Please do not bring crime into my neighborhood. A homeless shelter for 36 people and the safety issues it brings simply do not belong in this location. I appreciate the need for this facility, and I truly believe in its value, but I do not think a homeless shelter located near an elementary school fits the character or safe nature of the neighborhood and I respectfully ask that you do not approve its application.
