Joint Meeting of the City Commission and BSD7 Commission Memorandum REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission FROM: Andrea Surratt, City Manager SUBJECT: Joint Meeting of the City Commission and BSD7 MEETING DATE: October 14, 2019 AGENDA ITEM TYPE: Action RECOMMENDATION: Discuss topics of interest to BSD7and City Commissioners and give staff direction for follow up as needed BACKGROUND: The City of Bozeman is guided by the Strategic Plan that was developed and ultimately approved on April 16, 2018. Under Vision Statement 1. An Engaged Community, Vision Strategy 1.3 Public Agencies Collaboration, b) Enhance our relationship with Bozeman School District 7, the City of Bozeman has reached out to the School Superintendent and School Board to hold an annual joint meeting for the purposes of discussing topics of similar interest. The topics for discussion can include some or all of the following, as well as any additional topics of interest to both groups: • Update School Board members of the initial discussions happening among the Affordable Housing Working Group about the possibility of using school-owned land to provide housing for BDS7 (and possibly city) employees. • Discuss the possibility of using the new high school library as a book-drop, or "substation" of the Bozeman Public Library. • Discuss the possibility of having BSD7, Bozeman Health, Community Health Partners and Bozeman Public Library collaborate on an early reading project meant to connect very young children (particularly disadvantaged children) to books. • Review the positive partnerships that the school district and the city have had over the past 2 years – city staff to highlight • Discussion about the May 2020 ballot as a possible Parks and Trails District vote and the school’s intentions to put several items on the ballot • School Board Monday meeting times UNRESOLVED ISSUES: None. ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the City Commission. FISCAL EFFECTS: The fiscal effects of this discussion are not directly known but discussions that occur may generate follow up projects or research that have a cost. Attachments: none 148
