Creating a left-turn lane onto Classical Way would be a far more reasonable and community supporting use of the funds already committed to creating a left-turn lane onto Waters St. - and not solely because of Petra Academy. Classical Way is far more than a "dead-end street," since the number of regular and special events for which it is the sole access involves hundreds of Bozeman families every week. Every weekday at precisely the most congested times of day, more than 100 vehicles need to turn onto and exit from Classical Way - the only means of access to the school and Bronken Field - within the same 30-40 minute span. And, as the Petra proposal points out, several groups (some of them adding another 20-30 or more cars) use Bronken Field and rent the Petra athletic field and gymnaisum for practices, games, tournaments, and camps. This is a point of highly concentrated community activity. At no time of the week does Waters St. need to accommodate such congestion, and, obviously, there are multiple choices for entering Valley West - but only one entrance and exit for Classical Way. I suspect that whatever pre-project traffic data the city or engineers gathered for this construction shows clear and dramatic numbers backing up my comparison here. As the proposal letter from Petra points out, the traffic created by the new high school within the next calendar year will make any current plans for eventual traffic patterns (such as Classical Way users driving all the way to the Oak St roundabout to circle back south) unlikely to succeed. By my estimate, based on 2 years of use by my children and by me, the land and buildings only accessible via Classical Way serve, on a weekly basis, at least 200 families - with 130 or more of those families entering and exiting multiple times a day, every weekday, during "rush hour." I hope the Commission will act accordingly to support such an important, well-used, and well-maintained community center by changing the construction plans to create a left-turn lane onto Classical Way.
