Bozeman City Commissioners,
It has come to my attention that, you do not at this time, plan a left turn lane onto Classical Way from
Cottonwood Road. I implore you to reconsider this decision and add a left turn into Classical Way from
the south on Cottonwood Road and a left turn onto Cottonwood Rd from Classical Way for northbound
traffic coming out of Classical Way.
Classical Way has no other access to a city street and the parents/visitors for Petra School and the use of
Bronken Field have only Cottonwood Rd for access to this dead-end street. The traffic onto Classical
Way during the school year is already very busy and there is no easy way to access Classical Way from
the south if traffic is not allowed to make a left turn on Cottonwood Rd. Also, traffic wanting to go
north from Classical Way for parents picking up their children from Petra or Bronken Field have no
reasonable way to go north if they cannot make a left turn onto Cottonwood Rd. There are several
schools within a few blocks, that make this a congested and dangerous area at the end of the school day.
There are so many autos and children trying to cross/access/use Durston, this is a very dangerous area
for people wishing to travel north. The new high school will greatly increase the danger when young
drivers, always in a hurry and to often distracted by phones, radio or friends, try to move through this
area.
I understand there is a left turn planned for Waters Street. Please consider moving this left turn lane to
Classical Way. There are other ways of accessing Waters street for the neighborhood, but there is only
one way to access Classical Way and that is from Cottonwood Rd. Whereas, accessing Waters St would
be used by a few of those in the neighborhood, Classical Way has many parents and students accessing
it, all about the same time, twice a day and Classical Way has no other access to city streets.
I pick up my granddaughter from Petra and have tried many different ways to go north from Classical
Way. There is no reasonable route, the Ferguson/Durston intersection, at that time of the day, is backed
up for several blocks and the next north/south route is 19th which is already very congested. If
Cottonwood is extended far enough to connect with a cross street that can carry traffic around the
congestion on Durston and the Durston/Ferguson intersection, that will help even with the new high
school. However, unless there is a left turn onto Cottonwood Rd for traffic headed north, traffic will be
forced to move through streets in the neighborhood, which have not been designed for trough traffic
creating a dangerous situation for children walking home along those streets. It also will not relieve the
extreme congestion on the Ferguson/Durston intersection that time of day.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely
Dale Dechenne
