We have a safety concern about the busy roads downtown during Halloween trick or treating. It seems unsafe to us because cars are still driving down Main Street while young kids are trick or treating. Kids are excited and can run into the street and can be very hard to see by drivers. The kids are in costumes and can also have a hard time seeing cars too. It gets dark early in the fall too and makes it even harder to see at that time of day. We have noticed that downtown streets are closed during other community events like Music on Main, the Christmas Stroll, the Car Show and Bite of Bozeman. Halloween has more kids than any of the other events and always needs lots of police and other people to make sure cars stop at the all the lights and crosswalks and everyone is safe. We think that that Downtown Trick or Treating could be made safer by closing all the roads including cross-streets. Even just moving traffic on Main Street into the inside-lanes leaving the outside-lanes empty in each direction (in case kids step off the sidewalks or in between parked cars to avoid the crowded sidewalks) would make the event much safe for families. We hope that you can help us make Downtown Trick or Treating safer for the community, especially the young children, in time for the next Halloween. Our troop could help by fundraising if changes cost the city more money. We could gather signatures from our family, friends, neighbors and community members in support of making the Halloween event safer for everyone. We could also help by making signs or asking Girl Scouts to volunteer for traffic control. We hope that you will support us and write us back with ways we can help make Downtown Bozeman safer for our friends and family. Thank you very much for your time.
