Re: Cottonwood Road project
Bozeman City Commissioners,
It has recently come to my attention that, regarding the road construction project on
Cottonwood Road, there are currently no plans for a left turn from Cottonwood onto
Classical Way. I would ask that you please reconsider this plan, and be sure to add a left
turn onto Classical Way for north-bound traffic on Cottonwood.
For every single family, person, or group who is trying to access Classical Way from the
south, the current plan will force that traffic through the intersection of Durston and
Cottonwood. That is already a very busy intersection with multiple schools located
within blocks, not to mention the new High School opening next Fall. Traffic coming
from the south will be forced to drive through local neighborhoods, or do a U-Turn at the
Durston/Cottonwood intersection. Both of these options puts the lives of children and
families at risk, as you have multiple children in those neighborhoods and that
intersection who are walking to school daily.
As a parent of a student at Petra, I have already been forced to find my way through local
neighborhoods to get to Petra, due to construction. I cannot imagine how frustrating this
must be for the families in those neighborhoods. I have also tried driving north on the
freeway and west on Oak, to access Petra from the north. But this option forces me to
drive south on Flanders Mill (right by Meadowlark Elementary –very congested)and/or
on Cottonwood (right by the new High School, also congested and will be more so next
Fall), both of which are extremely busy streets with multiple children crossing at every
intersection. Next Fall, when the new High School opens, I can only imagine how
congested those streets will be. If you do not add a left turn lane onto Classical Way, you
will be adding countless numbers of cars to those already busy streets and intersections.
I implore you to not add further congestion to these busy traffic areas and to local
neighborhoods. Please do whatever is necessary to add a left turn lane onto Classical
Way for north-bound traffic on Cottonwood. Otherwise, you will be forcing every single
car trying to access Classical Way (for school, for sporting events, for wetland access, for
church-goers) to go through the already busy Durston/Cottonwood intersection.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Sheedy
