Re: Cottonwood Road project
Dear Bozeman City Commission,
I am writing to you as a concerned Gallatin Valley resident, and parent of a Petra Academy (4720
Classical Way, Bozeman, MT) student in support of Craig Dunham’s letter to you dated Friday, August 30
regarding the Cottonwood Road project.
Despite the inevitable traffic buildup that is certain to clog up the route in from the north in the
morning, my concern is not solely for myself and my family (who drive from Belgrade and come in from
the north), but for all of the families who come in from the south, (there are a great many who live in
Valley West) and the surrounding neighbors, as well as for the teams and organizations that utilize the
recreational soccer fields. Without a left turn lane in, we are only asking to compound the traffic issues
in an already snarled area.
Furthermore, in my experience, often when a left turn or route is blocked, people tend to do dangerous
and illegal things such as attempting to turn left anyway (despite it being posted as illegal), or to
perform other questionable traffic actions such as U-turns. Many parents of students have quite a
commute in the morning for drop-offs and pick-ups, and time is precious to many of us.
After considering this issue from a “big-picture” perspective, we respectfully request that that a left turn
lane be considered approaching Classical Way from the south. we feel this would be the most efficient
use of a turn lane for the entire area and would have the most benefit to all involved.
I am extremely grateful to the city planners for being willing to review alternatives and assess associated
costs. I am also grateful to you as city commissioners for considering all angles, and for reviewing and
considering the alternative plan. Thank you for your public service.
