Dear City Commissioners,
First of all, I want to thank you for all the time you have spent trying to think through what is best and
safest for the city of Bozeman, when it comes to planning roads and routes. I know you all have a lot to
consider and a lot of opinions to listen to, I can't imagine how exhausting it must be for you all. I really
appreciate the time that Bob Murray took to speak to me on the phone about my concerns with the
Classical way and Cottonwood intersection. I thought it might be wise to also write a public comment and
express my concerns.
I am concerned about the median going in between the lanes on Cottonwood that will not allow people
heading southbound on Cottonwood to enter left onto Classical Way. It seems to me that with all of the
present and future traffic of the new high school, it would not be wise to make these athletes, students,
and parents drive further north on Cottonwood, to either make them take a u-turn at Durston or make
them go all the way to the round about at Oak. If they went to the round about at Oak they would have to
go through the traffic of the new high school as they pass by its property between Durston and Oak; which
will be busy with many students and parents trying to get to school on time. It seems it would be wise to
allow for people to make a left at Classical Way from southbound Cottonwood or put in a round about at
Durston. I realize that I am just an amateur making suggestions and that there are a lot of things to consider
when making these sort of decisions. So I trust you will do what is best.
I am also personally impacted by this new median on Cottonwood that will not allow a left turn out of
Classical way, as I live on the Northwest side of Petra. I reside near the intersection of Laurel Pkwy and
Durston. I have a 16 year old daughter that drives herself and her 14 year old sister to and from Petra
everyday. I am mostly concerned about their route home, since they will no longer be able to make a left
out of Classical way and onto Cottonwood. We are trying to figure out the safest route home. Bob Murray
suggested that my girls take a right out of Classical way onto Cottonwood, then left at Babcock, then a left
onto Ferguson, then left on Durston, then right on to Laurel Parkway. I realize Bob Murray was looking for
the safest way home for my girls and I really appreciate his time in helping me with this route. However,
later I realized this would be taking them through three school zones on the way home, Heritage,
Meadowlark, and then the future High school. Then I thought it would probably be a long and hairy ride
home for them everyday. At one point in my conversation with Bob Murray I suggested how helpful it
would be if Laurel Pkwy was paved from Babcock north, through the Twin Lakes subdivision. This would
allow my girls to head out Classical Way, make a right onto Cottonwood, then a right onto Babcock, then a
right onto Laurel Pkwy. Bob Murray said he looked into it and he didn't think that that part of Laurel Pkwy
would be paved for a couple of years. If there was something that could be done to get Larurel Pkwy paved
sooner this would be a huge help. It could also alleviate some of the southbound Cottonwood traffic
headed to Bronken and Petra, as they could circle around the west side of Petra, from Cottonwood, make a
left onto Babcock , a right onto Laurel Pkwy, left at Durston, right at Cottonwood, then a right onto Classical
Way.
I thought I would bring these concerns forward for consideration. I know you all will do what is best and
safest. I really appreciate all of the time and energy you take to listen and consider our concerns.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Alicia Clark
