Bozeman City Commissioners:
My family lives near MSU and we have enrolled our sons at Petra Academy. I am writing to ask you
to reconsider including a left hand turning lane from Cottonwood onto Classical Way. I am
concerned about the safety of families living in Valley West, many of whom have children who walk
or ride their bikes to Meadowlark Elementary, Heritage Christian School, and/or Petra Academy.
We are early risers. Our morning routine includes a quick trip to The Ridge or a morning coffee (for
me) / hot chocolate at Fox Trot before school begins. In both cases, I purposefully return to Huffine
rather than cutting through Valley West because of the large number of families all heading off for
schools in the neighborhood. In the afternoons, I am often headed to Petra coming from The Ridge
or Rosauers. In all of these cases, we avoid going through Valley West by using Huffine and
Cottonwood. I am concerned that without a left turn from Cottonwood onto Classical, Petra families
and soccer families (using Bronken) will simply route through Valley West. This is more than a
potential nuisance for the Valley West neighborhood; it’s a safety issue for them, their children, and
pets.
If you haven’t already, please ask staff for the results of the traffic study they no doubt completed to
understand the volume of traffic that is about to change as a direct result of this decision. If my
intuition is correct, this is a serious increase that warrants your attention.
Respectfully,
Kris Stewart
